Abstract: Thermomechanical degradation of polyolefin(s) is carried out in a twin-screw extruder without the use of any additional degradation appts., at 300-500 degrees C and 1-100 bar over a mean dwell time of 0.5-10 min., during which the pressure is (a)periodically altered by 0.5-30 bar. Low molecular wt. polyolefin waxes prepd. by this method are also claimed.

Abstract: The preparation of a polymer essentially comprising units of the formula I in which R and R are hydrogen or methyl, and R is C1-C18-alkyl, C5-C12-cycloalkyl, C6-C10-aryl or C6-C10-aryl-C1-C4-alkyl, where these radicals, with the exception of the C1-C18-alkyl radicals, may be up to trisubstituted by radicals selected from the group consisting of C1-C4-alkyl, C1-C4-alkoxy and halogen, by reacting a polymer based on C1-C20-alkyl esters of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or mixtures thereof with ammonia or a primary amine in an extruder, by vigorously mixing the ammonia or the primary amine with a melt of the polymer to be reacted at a maximum temperature of 250 DEG C before carrying out the imidation, and the use of the polymers prepared by this process for the production of thermoplastic mouldings, films or fibres, and mouldings, films or fibres made from these polymers.

Abstract: A process for the continuous preparation of high-impact polystyrene-acrylonitrile (ABS) by the free radical-initiated polymerisation of a mixture of from 60 to 90% by weight of at least one vinyl aromatic monomer and from 10 to 40% by weight of at least one further ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of from 5 to 30% by weight, based on the sum of the monomers, of polybutadiene having a solution viscosity (5% strength by weight in styrene at 25 DEG C) of from 25 to 95 mPa.s and optionally in a solvent, in at least three series-connected reactors operating essentially with no back-mixing, at reaction temperatures of from 50 to 170 DEG C, phase inversion occurring in one of the reactors, the polymerisation being carried out as far as phase inversion at a temperature of 90 DEG C or below and being initiated by free radicals formed from the decomposition of tert.-butyl peresters whose half life period at 90 DEG C is not more than 20 minutes, the polybutadiene content, based on the total reaction mixture, being at least 10% by weight, and at most 25% of the entire amount of chain-transfer agent (regulator) required being added before phase inversion and the remainder thereafter.

Abstract: Rubber-modified, impact-resistant ABS moulding materials (I) are claimed. (I) are obtd. by polymerisation of styrene (S) and acrylonitrile (AN) in a soln. of preformed rubber in (S), (AN) and opt. a solvent; the novelty is that (I) contains, as rubber, a styrene-butadiene (SB) block copolymer and other polymer(s) (II) which is/are compatible with the polystyrene component of the rubber and Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I), by radical polymerisation of (S) and (AN) by known methods in a reaction mixt. contg. (S), (AN), initiator, opt. a solvent, SB block copolymer rubber and (II). Pref., in addn. to the SB rubber, (I) also contains a polybutadiene rubber; (II) is polystyrene, poly(cyclohexyl) (meth)acrylate) and/or PPE. USE/ADVANTAGE - The addn. of (II) in combination with the SB rubber gives ABS (I) (esp. injection moulding materials) with a combination of high surface gloss and high notch impact resistance, which can be produced by soln. or bulk polymerisation. Abstract: 1,256,296. Graft polymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 9 May; 1969 [11 May, 1968], No. 23672/69. Heading C3G. An impact-resistant polymer is produced by continuous polymerization of a solution of an elastomeric polymer in a vinyl aromatic or vinylidene aromatic monomer, the starting materials being introduced into an isothermal polymerization stage where a mixture containing less than 50% by weight of solids is prepared at a temperature of 50 to 150 C. while mixing, said mixture being continuously polymerized in a downstream polymerization stage in one or more tubular reactors at a temperature of up to 250 C. to give a mixture containing more than 60% by weight of solids, and then freed from volatile constituents, the said starting materials, prior to being fed into the said isothermal polymerization stage, being prepolymerized to such an extent that the solids content of the mixture is from 1ÀI to 2 times the content by weight of elastomeric polymer but not more than 16% by weight. Acrylic or methacrylic acid or an alkyl ester or nitrile thereof may be copolymerized with the aromatic monomer. In the examples, the polymerization mixture comprises polybutadiene or butadiene-styrene rubber, styrene, ethylbenzene and mineral oil.
