Abstract: Paper and paperboard of high dry strength are produced by adding a dry strength enhancer to the paper stock and dewatering the paper stock with sheet formation by using as the dry strength enhancer a mixture of a cationic polymer which contains as characteristic monomers copolymerized units of (a) diallyldimethylammonium chloride, (b) N-vinylamine or (c) a substituted or unsubstituted N-vinylimidazoline and has a K value of not less than 30, and natural potato starch which is converted into a water-soluble form by heating in an aqueous medium at above the gelatinization temperature of natural potato starch in the absence of any oxidizing agents or alkali.

Abstract: Water-soluble copolymers containing copolymerized vinylamine units are prepared by copolymerizing (a) from 95 to 10 mol % of N-vinylformamide and (b) from 5 to 90 mol % of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer from the group consisting of vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, C1-C4-alkyl vinyl ethers, the esters, nitriles and amides of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid and N-vinylpyrrolidone, and then eliminating from 30 to 100 mol % of the formyl groups from the copolymer. Preferred copolymers are copolymers of N-vinylformamide and vinyl acetate, in which from 30 to 100 mol % of the monomer units are hydrolyzed. The copolymers are used in papermaking to increase the dry strength and wet strength of the paper.

Abstract: Reaction products of hydrogen cyanide are prepared by a process in which hydrogen cyanide prepared in a conventional manner by pyrolysis at from 250 DEG to 650 DEG C. over a solid under from 5 to 200 mbar is cooled to a temperature of from 200 DEG to -10 DEG C. together with the other pyrolysis products, the hydrogen cyanide is then fed to a chemisorption reaction with a base or with a carbonyl compound, and the reaction products of hydrogen cyanide which are formed therein are removed from the system and brought to atmospheric pressure. In this process, the handling of large amounts of hydrogen cyanide is avoided.
