Abstract: Local IP access is provided in a wireless network to facilitate access to one or more local services. In some implementations, different IP interfaces are used for accessing different services (e.g., local services and operator network services). A list that maps packet destinations to IP interfaces may be employed to determine which IP interface is to be used for sending a given packet. In some implementations an access point provides a proxy function (e.g., a proxy ARP function) for an access terminal. In some implementations an access point provides an agent function (e.g., a DHCP function) for an access terminal. NAT operations may be performed at an access point to enable the access terminal to access local services. In some aspects, an access point may determine whether to send a packet from an access terminal via a protocol tunnel based on the destination of the packet.

Abstract: A method for generating a higher rate channel using a set of N lower rate channels, the method comprises generating a set of N sinusoids having a corresponding set of N phase offsets with predetermined phase rotations; upconverting said set of N lower rate channels using said set of N sinusoids and phase offsets yielding a set of upconverted signals; summing said set of upconverted signals yielding a summed signal whereby the peak-to-average amplitude of said summed signal is reduced based on said phase rotations; and transmitting said summed signal. A corresponding system is also disclosed.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating an autonomous Pilot Strength Measureme nt Message (PSMM) by a mobile station traveling in a multi-carrier wireless communication system. In a multi-carrier system, the mobile station receives the pilot channel of a base station on multiple carrier frequencies simultaneously. Fading may vary from carrier frequency to carrier frequency. New pilot strength definitions are used by the mobile station in a set of rules transmitted by the base station. The set of rules determines autonomous generation and transmission of PSMMs by the mobile station upon detection of pilots.

Abstract: Techniques for access channel load management in a wireless communication system are described. In an aspect, the load of the access channel may be controlled by having each terminal regulates its use of the access channel (e.g., its rate of system access) based on a rate control algorithm (e.g., token bucket). The rate control algorithm may maintain information on past activities of a terminal and may regulate the use of the access channel by the terminal based on its past activities in order to control the access channel load and achieve fairness. The system may determine (312) at least one parameter value for the rate control algorithm based on load conditions and may broadcast (314) the at least one parameter value to terminals. Each terminal may regulate (318) its use of the access channel based on the at least one parameter value received from the system (316).

Abstract: Techniques for minimizing call setup latency are disclosed. In one aspect, multiple signaling messages are encapsulated and sent as a single message thus reducing the total delay incurred by sequential transmission. In one embodiment, an encapsulation message includes a field indicating the number of messages encapsulated therein. In one example, the encapsulation is performed at a Link Access Control (LAC) layer. Alternate embodiments may perform encapsulation at an alternate layer.

Abstract: A novel method and apparatus is disclosed for performing seamless handoff of a mobile station (MS) between Radio Access Networks (RANs) that use different types of wireless interfaces. The described embodiments enable an MS to handoff between different RANs without causing routing ambiguity, and without substantial loss of network data. Upon moving from the coverage area of a first RAN using a first wireless interface to the coverage area of a second RAN using a second wireless interface, an MS determines whether routing ambiguity may result from the change of RAN and, based on the determination, triggers a re-registration of its network address. A foreign agent (FA) within a packet data serving node (PDSN) monitors network address re-registrations in order to determine whether multiple RAN-PDSN (R-P) connections are being created for the same MS. Based on this determination, the PDSN terminates redundant R-P network connections resulting from movement of the MS between different RANs.

Abstract: In a channel structure for use in communication systems, two sets of physical channels, one for the forward link (50) and another for the reverse link (52), are utilized to facilitate communication of a variety of logical channels. The physical channels comprise data and control channels. In the exemplary embodiment, the data channels comprise fundamental channels which are used to transmit voice traffic, data traffic, high speed data, and other overhead information and supplemental channels which are used to transmit high speed data. The fundamental channels can be released when the remote stations are idle to more fully utilize the available capacity. The control channels are used to transmit paging and control messages and scheduling information.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing location information to an Access Terminal (AT) when the Access Network (AN) is unable to contact a last serving PDSN, else maintaining the previous location information. In one embodiment, AN elements within an area supported by a Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) are given a same Access Network ID (ANID). In this way, movement of the AT within the area supported by the PDSN do not initiate an update of location information. The AT receives location information specific to the PDSN and not the AN.
