    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain efficiently a polymeric compd. having a transition temp. difference from the conventional ones and being thermoreversibly hydrophilic- hydrophobic by the radical-polymerizing of a specific vinyl compd. CONSTITUTION:N-(2-Methoxyethyl)-N-ethylacrylamide (A), which is a vinyl compd. of formula I, is obtd. by reacting acryloyl chloride, N-(2-methoxyethyl) ethylamine and triethylamine in a solvent at 0-10 deg.C. The title compd. with an MW corresponding to an intrinsic viscosity (measured in tetrahydrofuran soln. at 27 deg.C) of 0.01-6.0 and consisting of repeating units of formula II is obtd. by soln.-polymerizing the component A in the presence of 0.005-5wt.% polymn. initiator (B) (e.g., ammonium persulfate) based on the component A in an org. solvent having a concn. of the component A of 1-80wt.%.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce porous gel having high temperature response by applying beforehand gamma-rays, etc., to a water solution of polyvinyl methyl ether at a temperature lower than its phase transition temperature, then applying again gamma-rays, etc., thereto at a temperature higher than said temperature. CONSTITUTION:A water solution containing polyvinyl methyl ether is formed into a desired shape, which at first is kept at a temperature lower than its phase transition temperature and next gamma-rays or electron-beams are applied threreto beforehand so that crosslinking is properly started; then, the temperature of the solution is raised to a temperature higher than its transition temperature for further application of gamma-rays or electron-beams to said solution. By said process, the crosslinking velocity and phase separation velocity are kept well balanced, so that porous gel with fine pore is produced, which has a reversibility wherein the gel swells at low temperature and contracts at high temperature in the presence of water, a high temperature response and a variety of applications such as for energy conversion, actuator, etc.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an automatic hot and cold water selector valve having a simple structure and requiring no drive power by applying the constitution where a valve member is formed with heat reversible expansion and contraction material for employing the expanding and contracting behavior of a valve itself, and hot water or cold water is thereby selected automatically. CONSTITUTION:The inside of a hollow box type main body 1 is divided into a feed water chamber 2 at a lower level and a hot water chamber 3 and a cold water chamber 4 at an upper level. The chambers 2 to 4 are respectively fitted with pipe lines 2a to 4a for communication with the outside. By introducing cold water from the pipe line 2a to the feed water chamber 2, each of valve members 3d and 4d is caused to expand, and a through-hole 3b is thereby closed, while another through-hole 4b is opened, thereby introducing cold water from the chamber 2 only to the cold water chamber 4 and discharging the water outside through the pile line 4a. On the other hand, each of the members 3d and 4d is caused to contract by introducing hot water to the feed water chamber 2 and the hole 3b is thereby opened, while the hole 4d is closed, thereby introducing hot water from the chamber 2 only to the hot water chamber 3 and discharging the water outside through the pipe line 3a.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the temp.-sensitive gel in the form of a fine powder, thin film, etc., having excellent responsiveness by irradiating the high-polymer mold ing formed by the water insoluble salt of a high-polymer electrolyte to cover the surface of the temp.-sensitive high polymer with gamma rays or electron rays. CONSTITUTION:A gel preparing liquid contg. the temp.-sensitive high polymer of an N-substd. acrylamide high polymer, etc., and the water soluble salt of the high-polymer electrolyte, such as sodium alginate, is introduced into a solid bath of an aq. water soluble metal salt soln. of barium chloride, calcium chlo ride, etc., which form the insoluble salt with this high-polymer electrolyte. Then the water insoluble salt of the high-polymer electrolyte covers the surface of the temp. sensitive high polymer and forms the high-polymer molding which hardly exhibits tackiness. This molding is irradiated with the gamma rays or electron rays without being dried to dry the temp.-sensitive high polymer. The gel having the excellent responsiveness with the reversible form change, etc., in response with a temp. change in the presence of water is obtd. in this way.

    Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:N-(2-Methoxyethyl)-N-ethylacrylamide of the formula. USE:Useful as a raw material monomer for hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity thermally reversible type polymeric compounds capable of being utilized for light- shielding articles, temperature sensors, adsorbents, tools, interiors, mechanochemical materials, dyeing-preventing agents, separating agents, etc. PREPARATION:Acryloyl chloride, N-(2-methoxyethyl)ethylamine and triethylamine are reacted with each other in a solvent such as benzene or acetone at 0-10 deg.C to provide the component of the formula. The vinylic compound of the formula is a colorless liquid, soluble in water, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, acetone, THF, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, etc., and insoluble in n-hexane and n-heptane. The radical polymerization of the compound of the formula gives a hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity thermally reversible polymeric compound.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the cost, by maxing sludge and a polymeric gel water absorbent to absorb water, then separating the water absorbent, and kneading the sludge with high-early-strength cement to cake the sludge. CONSTITUTION:The sewage sludge 2 quantitatively supplied from a sewage sludge storage tank 1 is mixed with the polymeric gel water absorbent 3 in a mixer 4, and the mixture is separated by a screen 5 into dehydrated sludge 6 and hydrated gel 7. The hydrated gel 7 is charged in a dehydration tank 9 contg. hot water 8, and the dehydrated gel 10 is separated by a screen 11 from hot water and reutilized in a dehydrating agent storage 12. Meanwhile, the recovered hot water is returned to the dehydration tank 9 by a pump 14, the dehydrated sludge 6 passing through the screen 5 is kneaded by a kneader 17 with high-early-strength cement 15 and incinerated sludge ash 16, and the kneaded material is dried in a curing bed 18 and used for reclamation as caked sludge 19. By this method, energy is saved, and the cost can be reduced.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To expand the utilization range of a temp.-sensitive bending material to an actuator, a mechanochemical device, various implements, toys or the like by enabling reversible bending motion by laminating a temp.-sensitive dense gel layer to one surface of a temp.-sensitive porous gel plate-shaped body. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of a temp.-sensitive polymer composed of polyvinyl methyl ether or poly(N-ethylacrylamide) is irradiated with gamma-rays to be wholly crosslinked to form a porous gel plateshaped body 1. This gel body is cut into a plate shape and the aqueous solution of the same temp.- sensitive polymer is applied to one surface of the formed plate 1 in a hydrated state and irradiated with electron beam to laminate a temp.-sensitive dense gel layer 2. When the gel is formed by crosslinking the aqueous polymer solution, a crosslinking agent can be also used but, in order to easily control a crosslinking degree or to hold homogeneity, the irradiation with electron beam is pref.
