Abstract: Reinforced thermoplastic molding materials containing, as essential components, (A) from 40 to 94 parts by weight of a polymer component of (a1) from 10 to 90% by weight of polyphenylene ether and (a2) from 10 to 90% by weight, based in each case on A, of a styrene polymer toughened with an acrylate rubber or with an unhydrogenated or hydrogenated polymer of a conjugated diene, (B) from 1 to 20 parts by weight of a copolymer of (b1) from 70 to 99.9% by weight of a monomer from the group consisting of styrene, alpha -methylstyrene and styrene alkylated in the nucleus or a mixture of these monomers, (b2) from 0.1 to 30% by weight of one or more compounds from the group consisting of tert-butyl acrylate and tert-butyl methacrylate, or one or more compounds from the group of compounds of the general formula I I where R1 is hydrogen or methyl and R2, R3 and R4 are each an alkyl or alkoxy group of not more than 4 carbon atoms, or of the general formula II II where n is an integer from 1 to 4 and R5, R6 and R7 are each one of the radicals stated for R2 or are each -O(CH2-CH2-O)mR8, where R8 is C1-C4-alkyl and m is 1, 2, 3 or 4, and (b3) from 0 to 10% by weight, based on the copolymer, of a further ethylenically unsaturated monomer which is copolymerizable with b1 and b2, and (C) from 5 to 50 parts by weight of a reinforcing agent, the number of parts by weight being based on 100 parts by weight of the sum of A, B and C, are prepared and used for the production of moldings.

Abstract: A process for the continuous preparation of high-impact polystyrene-acrylonitrile (ABS) by the free radical-initiated polymerisation of a mixture of from 60 to 90% by weight of at least one vinyl aromatic monomer and from 10 to 40% by weight of at least one further ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of from 5 to 30% by weight, based on the sum of the monomers, of polybutadiene having a solution viscosity (5% strength by weight in styrene at 25 DEG C) of from 25 to 95 mPa.s and optionally in a solvent, in at least three series-connected reactors operating essentially with no back-mixing, at reaction temperatures of from 50 to 170 DEG C, phase inversion occurring in one of the reactors, the polymerisation being carried out as far as phase inversion at a temperature of 90 DEG C or below and being initiated by free radicals formed from the decomposition of tert.-butyl peresters whose half life period at 90 DEG C is not more than 20 minutes, the polybutadiene content, based on the total reaction mixture, being at least 10% by weight, and at most 25% of the entire amount of chain-transfer agent (regulator) required being added before phase inversion and the remainder thereafter.

Abstract: Process is for prodn. of high-mol. wt. polyphenylene ethers. (I) from monohydric phenols with alkyl or aryl substits. in the 2 ortho positions or also in one meta position but not in the para position (II), by oxidative coupling with oxygen at 20-60 deg.C in the presence of a complex catalyst consisting of a Cu salt and an organic amine (III), in a 6-10C aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, and working up the polycondensate soln. obtd.; the novelty is that (III) is an amine of formula (I)-(V) (where R1-R6 = (1-(r-methylpiperidinyl) or Ph-CH2CH2CH2-; R2 = 1-2C alkyl; R3, R4, R5, R6 = H or 1-4C alkyl). Pref. (III) is piperazine or N,N'-dimethylpiperazine. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used for prodn. of moulded components. The process enables the prodn. of high-mol. wt. (I) in a relatively short reaction time (w.r.t. prior-art processes), with smaller amts. of coloured by-prods., etc..

Abstract: The moulding materials (I) contain at least 20 wt.% block (A), 5-95 wt.% copolymer of cyclohexyl (meth)acrylate and up to 95 wt.% styrene (B) and 5-95 wt.% unmodified or elastomer-modifed copolymer (C) obtd. by radical polymerisation of 5-95 wt.% styrene, 5-95 wt.% acrylonitrile and up to 40 wt.% of a separately-produced elastomer with Tg below 0 deg.C; (A) is a linear or branched copolymer or a mixt. thereof, obtd. by anionic polymerisation of 40-95 wt.% styrene and 5-60 wt.% butadiene Pref., (I) contain the usual additives. (B) is pref. a blcok copolymer obtd. by anioic polymerisation, or a homopolymer of cyclohexyl (meth)acrylate or a copolymer obtd. by radical polymerisation. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful esp. for the prodn. of equipment housings, sheet, film, tubing and toys, by injection moulding, deep drawing, etc.. Incorporation of (B) as compatibility promoter reduces or prvents the loss in impact strength caused by adding S/A copolymers to SB block copolymers to improve chemical and thermal stability.
