Abstract: Preparation of guanidine derivatives (I) comprises reacting O-alkylisourea salts (II) with an amine (III) in the presence of seed crystals of (I). Preparation of guanidine derivatives of formula (I) comprises reacting O-alkylisourea salts of formula (II) with an amine of formula (III) in the presence of seed crystals of (I). R1 = 1-8C alkylene or a divalent 5-10C cycloaliphatic group; R2 = H or 1-8C alkyl; or NR1R2 = 5-6 membered ring substituted by Z; Z = COOR3, SO2OR3 or PO(OR3)(OR4); R3 = H, alkalimetal or an equivalent of an alkaline earth metal; and R4 = as for R3 or 1-6C alkyl; R5 = 1-8C alkyl; X = equivalent of an anion.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for carrying out a solid-liquid reaction, according to which a) a reaction suspension is prepared, containing a first reactant which is suspended in a suspension medium and a second reactant which is dissolved in the same, one of the reaction products being insoluble in the suspension medium, b) the reaction suspension is guided through a longish reaction zone, the Reynolds number of the flow being less than 20,000, and c) the insoluble reaction product formed is separated. The method is advantageous in that the insoluble reaction product is obtained in a form which is easy to filter.

Abstract: A process is described for preparing ammonium salts of aromatic carboxylic acids by reacting an aromatic carboxylic acid with ammonia in an aprotic solvent, which comprises carrying out the reaction in a closed vessel by continuously introducing a solution of the aromatic carboxylic acid in the aprotic solvent and passing in gaseous ammonia so that an ammonia partial pressure in the range from 0.1 to 3 bar is maintained in the gas space of the vessel, and discharging a suspension of the ammonium salt in the aprotic solvent. The process allows the preparation of ammonium salts of defined crystal size having a narrow size distribution.

Abstract: Purification of creatine (I) involves adding the (I) to be purified, in anhydrous form, to a saturated aqueous solution of (I) monohydrate, so that the anhydrous (I) is dissolved with hydration, then separating the crystals of (I) monohydrate which precipitate from the solution. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of (I) monohydrate, by: (a) reacting sarcosine with an guanylating agent in an aqueous medium, so that crude (I) monohydrate is precipitated; (b) separating the crude product form the medium; (c) optionally washing; (d) converting the product into anhydrous (I); (e) adding the anhydrous (I) to a saturated aqueous solution of (I) monohydrate, so that the anhydrous (I) is dissolved with hydration; (f) separating the crystals of (I) monohydrate which precipitate from the solution; and (g) utilizing the aqueous solution at least partially as aqueous medium in step (a) and/or washing liquid in step (c).

Abstract: Continuous preparation of 2-bromo-2-nitro-1,3-propandiol (I) comprises: (i) feeding nitromethane (II) and 1 or 2 aqueous solutions containing formaldehyde and alkali hydroxide into a first cooled reaction zone; (ii) transferring the reaction mixture directly to second cooled reaction zone(s), together with bromine; and (iii) isolating (I) from the aqueous reaction mixture.
