An ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid and/or dicarboxylic acid (monomer A) (in wt.%) (50-99.5), ethylenically unsaturated compound (0.5-50) (monomer B), and an optional monomer (monomer C) (up to 20), are polymerized in an aqueous medium in the presence of at least one foam inhibitor, to prepare an aqueous copolymer solution. The monomer (B) is chosen from esters of ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids and monoesters and diesters of ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids with an amine containing at least one hydroxyl group.
