    Abstract: A plastic object with a transparent surface layer is claimed (I), in which the surface layer contains (at least) Si, C and O and has at least 3 sub-zones as follows: (A) a zone 5-500 nm thick directly on the surface of the plastic object (IA), contg. 1-40 atom% Si, 1-30 atom% O and 40-98 atom% C (w.r.t. Si+O+C), with binding energies of 98-102 eV for the Si 2p-photoelectrons, 284-286 eV for the C ls-photoelectrons and 531-533 eV for the O ls-photoelectrons; (B) a zone 100-2000 nm thick, above zone (A), contg. 10-40 atom% Si, 10-30 atom% O and 20-60 atom% C, with corresp. electron binding energies = 101-103 eV, 283-285 eV and 51-55 eV; (C) a zone 500-10,000 nm thick above (B), contg. 20-40 atom% Si, 30-79 atom% O and 1-40 atom% C, with corresp. binding energies = 102-104 eV, 282-284 eV and 532-534 eV. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I), by coating the plastic (IA) by plasma-assisted chemical deposition, using a gas mixt. contg. silane, siloxane, and/or silazane monomer(s). USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the prodn. of side windows, headlight lenses, sun roofs, etc. for cars, windows for aircraft, caravans and buildings, glazing for terraces, and greenhouses, advertisement covers, safety glass, lenses for spectacles, sighting devices, optical components, contrast windows for TV etc., optical fibres, solar cells, etc. The invention provides plastic prods. with a colourless highly transparent surface layer with excellent scratch resistance, high UV stability, low water absorption and permeability, excellent chemical resistance, and high adhesion to the substrate. The prodn. process is simple, and can be used with substrates of widely varied geometry.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for making microstructures having structure depths ranging from several mu m up to the mm range by imagewise irradiation of polymers which have been applied to electrically conductive substrates using an adhesive layer, with synchrotron radiation and removal of the imagewise irradiated regions. The adhesive layer is composed of at least two different chemical elements which are applied by simultaneous vapour deposition or cathode sputtering onto the conductive substrate and are selectively or partly removed before the application of the polymer. The process is suitable for making metal or plastic microstructures.
