    Abstract: A multimetal oxide of the formula I Aga-bMbV2Ox*cH2O,  I where M is a metal selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Tl, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, Au, Al, Fe, Co, Ni and/or Mo, a is from 0.3 to 1.9 and b is from 0 to 0.5, with the proviso that the difference (a−b)≧0.1 and c is from 0 to 20 and x is a number determined by the valence and amount of elements different from oxygen in the formula I, which has a crystal structure giving an X-ray powder diffraction pattern which displays reflections at the lattice spacings d of 15.23±0.6, 12.16±0.4, 10.68±0.3, 3.41±0.04, 3.09±0.04, 3.02±0.04, 2.36±0.04 and 1.80±0.04 Å. Precatalysts and catalysts produced therefrom for the partial oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons are also provided.

    Abstract: Phthalic anhydride is prepared by catalytic gas-phase oxidation of xylene and/or naphthalene by a gas comprising molecular oxygen in a fixed bed at elevated temperature and using at least three coated catalysts arranged in superposed zones, which catalysts have a layer of catalytically active metal oxides applied to a core of support material. In the process described, the catalyst activity rises from zone to zone from the gas inlet end to the gas outlet end and the activity of the catalysts of the individual zones is set such that the least active catalyst comprises a lower amount of active composition and, if desired, additionally more alkali metal selected from the group consisting of potassium, rubidium and cesium as dopant than the catalyst of the next zone and the subsequent even more active catalyst comprises the same amount of active composition and even less alkali metal as dopant or a greater amount of active composition and, if desired, less alkali metal as dopant than the catalyst of the second zone, with further conditions.

    Abstract: In a process for preparing phthalic anhydride by catalytic gas-phase oxidation of o-xylene/naphthalene mixtures by molecular oxygen, use is made of a catalyst I in a first zone on the gas inlet side which makes up from 25 to 75 percent by volume of the total catalyst volume, comprising, in each case based on the catalytically active composition, from 1 to 10% by weight of vanadium oxide (calculated as V205), from 1 to 10% by weight of antimony oxide (calculated as Sb203) and from 80 to 98% by weight of titanium dioxide of the anatase type having a BET surface area of from 13 to 28 m2/g and also from 0.05 to 1% by weight of cesium (calculated as Cs) applied to a steatite support and a catalyst II in a second zone which makes up the remaining 75 to 25 percent by volume of the total catalyst volume, comprising, in each case based on the catalytically active composition, from 1 to 10% by weight of vanadium oxide (calculated as V205), from 1 to 10% by weight of antimony oxide (calculated as Sb203) and from 80 to 98% by weight of titanium dioxide of the anatase type having a BET surface area of from 13 to 28 m2/g and from 0.01 to 1% by weight of phosphorus oxide (calculated as P) and also from 0.01 to 0.2% by weight of cesium (calculated as Cs) applied to a steatite support, wherein the cesium content of the catalyst II is less than 15% by weight of the cesium content of the catalyst I and the catalyst I and the catalyst II have been prepared without addition of compounds of niobium.

    Abstract: Multi-metal oxides based on silver, vanadium and optionally other metal(s) also contain phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and/or bismuth. Multi-metal oxides consisting essentially of compounds of formula Aga-cQbMcV2Od.eH2O (I), in which a = 0.3-1.9; Q = phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and/or bismuth; b = 0.001-0.3; M = lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, thallium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, chromium, gold, aluminum, iron, cobalt, nickel and/or molybdenum; c = 0-0.5; (a-c) = not less than 0.1; d = a number determined by the valency and occurrence of elements other than oxygen; e = 0-20. The powder X-ray patterns of these oxides (I) show diffraction lines at lattice plane separations (d) of 15.23 \! 0.6, 12.16 \! 0.4, 10.68 \! 0.3, 3.41 \! 0.04, 3.09 \! 0.04, 3.02 \! 0.04, 2.36 \! 0.04 and 1.80 \! 0.04 Angstrom . Independent claims are also included for: (a) a method for the production of (I) by heating a suspension of vanadium pentoxide in a liquid with a solution of silver salt and the element Q or a compound of Q, optionally with the addition of a compound of M; (b) pre-catalysts for the production of shell catalysts for the partial gas-phase oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons with molecular oxygen-containing gas, comprising an inert, non-porous support coated with one or more layers of (I); (c) shell catalysts for the above application, made from (I) and an inert support, in which the catalytically active material in the shell(s) contains 30-100 wt% silver-vanadium bronze(s) with an Ag:V atom ratio of 0.15-0.95 and a BET surface of 2-100 m /g; (d) a process for the production of aldehydes, carboxylic acids and/or anhydrides by partial oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons (see above) using shell catalysts as in (c) in the presence or absence of other shell catalysts for this application containing vanadium pentoxide and anatase as active components (which are, if present, used in a combined catalyst bed).

    Abstract: Shell catalyst for catalytic gaseous phase oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons, which contains in an inert non-porous support a catalytically active material with a given content of vanadium oxide, titanium oxide, a cesium compound, a phosphorus compound and antimony oxide, wherein the catalytically active material is applied in two or more layers and wherein the outer layers have 50 to 100 % less antimony oxide content than the inner layer or layers and wherein the amount of catalytically active material of the inner layer or layers accounts for 10 to 90 % by weight of the overall amount of total catalytically active material. The invention also relates to a method for the production of said catalysts and to a method for the production of carboxylic acids and/or carboxylic acid anhydrides and especially phthalic acid anhydride using said catalysts.
