    Abstract: Detergent compositions, which may be in solid, powder, liquid or paste form contain as a soil suspending agent 0,5-5%, preferably 1-3%, by weight of the total composition of at least one water-soluble, e.g. an alkali metal (preferably sodium) or ammonium, salt of a copolymer of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid with vinylsulphonic acid, said copolymer most preferably comprising 90-80% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid and 10-20% of vinylsulphonic acid and having a K-value of 100-130. The compositions may include detergents such as soaps, alkyl sulphonates and sulphates, fatty acid condensates with aminocarboxylic and -sulphonic acids, protein condensates, polyglycol ether condensates with fatty alcohols, amines and amides, and with fatty and resin acids, and quaternary ammonium compounds, but the preferred detergent is sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate. Lactic and citric acid; alkali metal ortho- and condensed phosphates, silicates, aminopolycarboxylates, e.g. sodium aminotriacetate and ethylene diamine tetracetate; perborates, percarbonates, hypochlorites; sodium sulphate and chloride; chlorinated hydantoin and cyanuric acid and salts thereof; aminocoumarin, diaminostilbene disulphonic acid and bis-styrylbenzene fluorescent brighteners; protein hydrolyzates; fatty amides; medium chain length alcohols; triaryl and trialkyl phosphates; and polyhydric alcohols may also be incorporated.

    Abstract: Stable aqueous dispersions are obtained by copolymerizing (by weight based on the total of the two principal monomers) 60 to 92% vinylidene chloride, 8 to 40% of an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with a C1-8 alcohol, and 0,1 to 2% vinyl sulphonic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof in the presence of an emulsifier. The emulsifier may be added partly before and partly during polymerization and further emulsifier may be added subsequently. C1-8 alcohols specified are methyl, ethyl, butyl and ethyl hexyl. Watersoluble vinyl sulphonates specified are the alkali, alkaline-earth and ammonium salts. Optional comonomers specified are up to 2% of acrylic acid or acrylamide or 1-5% of acrylonitrile or vinyl chloride. Preferred emulsifiers are alkali salts of C12-24 paraffin sulphonic acids. The preferred pH is 5-6 obtained by using phosphoric acid and a buffer, e.g. sodium or potassium phosphate, sodium pyrophosphate or sodium acetate. Suitable catalysts are sodium or potassium persulphate, hydrogen peroxide or azo compounds; reducing agents, e.g. ascorbic acid or sodium hyposulphite may also be present. The surface tension is preferably kept below 35 dynes/cm. during polymerization. The emulsions obtained are suitable for coating paper or textiles. In the examples the following emulsifiers are also used:- sodium dodecyl phenyl sulphonate; the sulphonated reaction product of ethylene oxide with octyl phenol; and potassium C12-14 fatty alcohol sulphonate.

    Abstract: A thermoplastic composition comprises up to 99% (by weight) of a polymer of vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride and at least 1% of a copolymer of 88 to 99% of a polymerisable ethylenically unsaturated ester and 20 to 1% of an N-vinyl lactam. The chloride polymer may be a homopolymer or copolymer in any ratio of vinyl and vinylidene chlorides or a copolymer based thereon and containing only a minor proportion of other monomers. Polymerisable esters specified are acrylic and methacrylic esters of C1-12 alcohols, e.g. methyl, ethyl, butyl and dodecyl acrylate, and ethyl and butyl methacrylate; and vinyl esters containing up to 12 carbon atoms, e.g. vinyl propionate and butyrate. Suitable lactams are N-vinyl-pyrrolidone,-epsiloncaprolactam, and -omega-caprylic lactam. The copolymer may also contain other vinyl compounds, e.g. styrene, vinyl ethers, vinyl chloride, and vinyl methyl ketone. The copolymers may have varying K values, e.g. 20 to 30 ; 60 to 80 ; or below 15 ; they are soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons esters, ketones, simple alcohols, and gasoline hydrocarbons ; they are compatible with cellulose esters, alkyd resins and urea resins as well as vinyl and vinylidene chloride polymers. Examples comprise :-(i) 80 parts PVC and 20 parts 98/2 butyl acrylate/N-vinyl-caprolactam (ii) 100 parts of an 85/15 vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride copolymer and 10 parts of a 90/10/5 butyl acrylate/N-vinyl 2-pyrrolidone/cyclohexene copolymer; and (iii) PVC and a 95/5/5 ethyl acrylate/N-vinyl 2-pyrrolidone/allyl alcohol copolymer.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of insoluble and only slightly swellable polymers or copolymers of N-vinyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl caprolactam and N-vinyl pipe idone, in which N-vinyl pyrrolidone or a mixture of N-vinyl pyrrolidone with from 5 to 100% by weight, based on N-vinyl pyrrolidone, of N-vinyl caprolactam or N-vinyl piperidone, is polymerized in dilute aqueous solution at pHs greater than 6 with the exclusion of oxygen and in the presence of a cyclic amide containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups, of which at least one is attached to an amide nitrogen atom, and in the presence of from 0.05 to 2% by weight, based on N-vinyl pyrrolidone, of at least one substance selected from the group consisting of ascorbic acid, ethyl acetoacetate and pyruvic acid, said polymerization being carried out at from 50.degree. tv 100.degree.C.

    Abstract: Packaging material is prepared by coating flat substrates with aqueous dispersions of polymers of vinylidene chloride wherein the aqueous polymer dispersions are mixtures of an aqueous dispersion of 50 to 75 parts by weight of a copolymer A of 85 to 92% by weight of vinylidene chloride and 15 to 8% by weight of an ester of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid having 3 to 5 carbon atoms with an alcohol containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms and an aqueous dispersion of 25 to 50 parts by weight of a copolymer B of 55 to 67% by weight of butadiene and 33 to 45% by weight of acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile. From 10 to 50% by weight of the ester units of copolymer A may be replaced by units of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and/or vinyl chloride. Up to 20% by weight of the units of butadiene in copolymer B may be replaced by units of one or more esters of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids having 3 to 5 carbon atoms with alcohols containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms. Examples of copolymers are given. The substrate may be fibrous e.g. paper, or films or sheeting of plastics e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, and metal foils e.g. aluminium foil. The coating may be applied by means of doctor knives, air brushes or rollers, spray, flooding, pouring a dipping means. A further coating containing a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and methyl acrylate may be applied.
