Abstract: Lactones are prepared by catalytic carbonylation of oxiranes using a catalyst system comprising a) at least one cobalt compound as component A and b) at least one metal compound of the formula (I) as component B, MX x R n-x (I) where M is an alkaline earth metal or a metal of group 3, 4 or preferably 12 or 13 of the Periodic Table of the Elements, R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted on the carbon atoms other than the carbon atom bound to M, X is an anion, n is a number corresponding to the valence of M and x is in the range from 0 to n, with n and x being selected so that the compound is uncharged, as catalyst.

This process can be used for preparing high-impact polystyrene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers or methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene copolymers.

Abstract: A process for the polymerisation of dienes in a solvent containing vinyl-aromatic monomers is carried out in presence of an organometallic compound of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum or tungsten as catalyst, a Lewis acid cocatalyst and optionally an alkylating agent and/or a regulator. Independent claims are also included for: (a) production of high-impact polystyrene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers or methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene copolymers using a rubber solution produced by the above process; (b) continuous production of impact-modified thermoplastic molding materials containing a rubber-based soft phase dispersed in a hard vinyl-aromatic matrix, by (1) polymerizing dienes in vinyl-aromatic monomer solution as above in a first reaction zone, (2) transferring the diene rubber to a second zone and subjecting it to anionic or radical polymerisation, optionally in presence of further vinyl-aromatic monomer or other comonomers in amounts sufficient to achieve phase inversion and (3) completing the polymerisation in a third zone with the amount of vinyl-aromatic monomer required for the impact-modified material.
