Abstract: Production of rubber-modified styrene polymers (I) comprises (1) producing rubber (II) dispersion by anionic dispersion polymerization of diene and optionally styrene monomer(s) in 3-6 carbon aliphatic hydrocarbon (III) which is nonsolvent for (II); (2) mixing intensively with styrene monomer and optionally comonomer, without separating (III), to dissolve (II) in monomer(s); and (3) anionic or free radical polymerization of (II) solution to (I) and simultaneous removal of (III). An independent claim is also included for rubber-modified styrene polymers made by this process.

Abstract: Thermoplastic nanocomposites (I) comprises (A) a thermoplastic polymer (B) a compound comprising negatively charged phyllosilicates and cations (delaminated phyllosilicate) dispersed uniformly in (A) and (C) a rubber or rubber mixture having a particle size distribution such that the d(50) value is 10-1000 nm. Independent claims are included for: (i) a process to prepare (I) by an in-situ method where the hydrophobically treated (B) in suspension or solid form is mixed with monomers of (A) such that swelling of (B) occurs and polymerization of the monomers is carried out and the resulting nanocomposite is mixed with (C) and optionally other components; (ii) a process to produce molded articles from (I) by extrusion, deep drawing or injection molding and (iii) the resulting molded articles.

Also claimed are: (a) a starter composition containing (II), (III) and (IV); and (b) its preparation by (1) mixing alkyl and/or alkylaryl alkali compound(s) with (III), then (2) adding an alkyl alkylacrylate in an amount stoichiometrically equivalent to the alkali compound finally (3) adding (IV).
