Abstract: Polyacetals obtainable by reaction of (a) a dialdehyde of the formula OHC-An-CHO where A=C1-C4-alkylene or and n is 0 or 1, is reacted with (b) a polycarboxylic acid of 5 to 7 carbon atoms which contains not less than 3 OH groups, in a molar ratio (a):(b) of 1:0.25 to 4 in an aqueous medium in the presence of an acid catalyst, are used as additives in washing agents and as complexing agents for heavy metal ions.

Abstract: New builder for washing and cleaning agents comprises a mixt. of (a) 50-90 wt. % of >=1 copolymer of 35-80 mol. % of (meth)acrylic acid and 20-65 mol. % of an acrylic acid hydroxyalkyl ester with 2-4C in the hydroxyalkyl gp., and/or alkali salts of this, and (b) 50-10 wt. % of >=1 polymaleic acid with a mol. wt. of 200-1500. The mixt. of (a) and (b) gives a synergistic building action in washing and cleaning agents and provides good sequestering of Ca and Mg ion and good dirt suspension properties. Prods. are useful substitutes for phosphate builders.

Also described are polymers, which can be obtained by polymerizing aromatic vinyl compounds, olefins, cycloolefins and/or dienes, as D monomers and anhydrides of ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids as E monomers, and which can be used both as parent compounds for the above-mentioned polymers and as additives for mineral building materials.
