Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a crystalline solid of the subject compound substantially not containing an additive and having virtually sufficiently low hygroscopic property. SOLUTION: This crystalline solid constituted of a glycine-N,N-diacetic acid derivative represented by formula I [R is a 1-30C alkyl or a 2-30C alkenyl, a group of formula II (A is a 1-12C alkylene bridge, etc.; M is H or an alkali metal, etc.), etc.] is produced by distilling away water content of an aqueous solution of (A) glycine-N,N-diacetic acid derivative I [R is a 1-20C alkyl or a group of formula II, etc.] as a starting substance. Crystallization is carried out by adding a crystalline component A in an amount of 0.001-50wt.%, preferably 0.01-10wt.% based on an amount of the component A in a starting substance as a nucleus for crystallization and the crystallization temperature is controlled to 10-100 deg.C, especially 40-80 deg.C. The resultant crystalline solid has a purity of 70-99.9%, especially 80-99.5% based on total amount of solid.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a film-forming agent having good compatibility with a hydrocarbon-based propellant and useful for a hair cosmetic capable of simultaneously exhibiting good hair setting actions and low hygroscopicity. SOLUTION: This hair setting agent and hairdressing comprise a polymer based on N-vinylcaprolactam as a film-forming agent. The polymer is composed of 35-75 wt.% of group IV of the N-vinylcaprolactam monomer (monomer A), 25-65 wt.% of a mixture of 20-60 pts.wt. of a monomer D with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid (monomer F) and 0-4 wt.% of other radically polymerizable monomers E or 35-80 wt.% of group V of the N-vinylcaprolactam (monomer A), 20-65 wt.% of a mixture of 15-50 pts.wt. of the monomer D with 5-15 pts.wt. of an alkyl acrylate or an alkyl methacrylate monomer (monomer G) having 1-4 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and further amino group unsubstituted or substituted with a 1-4C alkyl group and 0-4 pts.wt. of the other radically polymerizable monomers E. The existing carboxyl groups of the polymer are partially or wholly neutralized with an amine. The polymer contained in the hair setting agent and hairdressing is excellent in compatibility with a nonpolar propellant and exhibits good hair setting actions and curl retention and low water absorptivity.

Abstract: Use of glycine-N,N-diacetic acid derivs. of formula (I) is claimed as complex formers for alkaline earth or heavy metals. R = 1-20C alkyl, 2-20C alkenyl or -A.CH(COOM).N(CH2COOM)2; A = 1-12C alkylene or a chemical bond; M = H, alkali metal or opt. substd. ammonium. The use of ~a-alanine-N,N-diacetic acids as builders in textile-washing powders or as Ca sequestrants in oral hygiene compsns. is specifically excluded. Also claimed are 2-alkylglycine-N,N-diacetonitriles or 2-alkylglycinenitrile -N,N-diacetonitriles (where alkyl = 1-20C alkyl or 2-20 C alkenyl); and cpds. of formula (II). X = carboxylic acid or nitrile function. Cpds. of formula (I) are new except when R = 1-3C alkyl and A = chemical bond.

The copolymerizates in question have a K-value of at least 8 (determined after H. Fikentscher). Also disclosed are methods of producing the water-soluble copolymerizates by copolymerization of the monomers in the presence of radical-forming polymerization initiators, and the use of the polymerizates as scale inhibitors.

Abstract: Use of iminodiacetic acid derivs. (I) as complexing agent or builder in alkaline cleaning formulations for the drinks and food industries is new. R=H, 1-4C alkyl, CH2CH2X, CH2CHOHX, -C(CH2OH)2X or CHY(-CH2)-nX; X= COOH (opt. as alkali metal or (substd.) ammonium salt) or CONH2 (opt. N substd.); Y = COOH (opt. in salt form as X); Z = H or OH; n = 1 or 2. Also new is an aq. cleaning formulation contg. 0.05-30 wt.% (I); 2-50 wt.% alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate and/or silicate, and 1-30 wt.% surfactant. USE/ADVANTAGE - The compsns. are used to clean bottles and machinery used in dairies, breweries or industries which mfr. and process preserved foods, baked goods, sugar, fat and meat. They give good results for removal of e.g. Ca salt deposits, hop resins, fat and dough residues etc. Unlike known iminodiacetic acid derivs., (I) can be formulated without organic solvents and also have an improved spectrum of activity. (I) are extraordinarily effective chelating agents for alkaline earth metals, e.g. Ca, and have extremely high Ca-binding capacity. They are readily biodegradable and have low toxicity.
