Abstract: Formaldehyde-free binder composition in powder form comprises a maleic anhydride/alpha-olefin copolymer and a crosslinker having at least two reactive groups capable of reacting with the carbonyl groups of maleic anhydride. Independent claims are also included for: (1) binding fibrous and/or granular substrates by mixing the above composition with the substrates and preferably heating the mixture, optionally with addition of a catalyst; (2) products produced as above.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing copolymers from vinyl esters and monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids by the radical copolymerisation of: (a) 20 to 80 mol % vinyl esters of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having at least two carbon atoms, (b) 80 to 20 mol % monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and, optionally, (c) 0 to 30 mol % of other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which can be copolymerised, and/or (d) 0 to 10 mol % monomers containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated non-conjugated double bonds in the molecule, in the presence of at least one sulphur, phosphorus and/or nitrogen compound having a reducing effect and of 0.05 to 30 wt %, relative to the monomers, of at least one surfactant in an aqueous medium and in the presence of initiators and, optionally, regulators. The invention further relates to the use of the copolymers or the copolymers comprising vinyl alcohol units obtained therefrom by hydrolysis and/or oxidation, as additives for washing and cleaning agents.

Abstract: Water-soluble copolymers (I) of vinyllactic acid (IIA) and/or isopropenyllactic acid (IIB) are new. (I) are obtained by polymerising (a) 0.1-70 wt.% (IIA) and/or (IIB) or the alkali or ammonium salts and/or esters with 1-6 carbon (C) monohydric alcohols with (b) 99.9-30 wt.% monoethylenically unsaturated 4-8 C dicarboxylic acids (III) or their alkali or ammonium salts and optionally (c) other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers (IV) and/or (d) monomers (V) with >= 2 ethylenically unsaturated double bonds. (I) have a Fikentscher K value of 7-100 (determined in 1 wt.% aqueous solution of sodium (Na) salt at pH 7 and 25 deg C). Also claimed is a method of producing (I).
