Abstract: Esters of formula R1COOCHR3CH2R2 (I) are prepd. by reacting acids R1COOH with olefins R2CH=CHR2 at 141-350 degrees C in presence of (a) a mixt. of SiO2 and H3PO4 as catalyst, H3PO4 is 10-70 wt.% of total catalyst, and (b) as additional catalyst H3PO4 and/or >=1 phosphate ester (where R1 and R2 = aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic gps. or H; R3 = H or R2 + R3 complete an alicyclic ring). (I) are solvents, esp. for varnishes and synthetic resins, and starting materials for dyes, pesticides, varnishes, perfumes, plasticisers and plastics. Process is simple, can be operated continuously and gives good yields of high purity.
