Abstract: The invention concerns insoluble polymers which can swell only slightly and contain units of formula (I) and/or (II), in which R is H, C1-C6 alkyl; R , R are H, C1-C20 alkyl, aryl, aralkyl; and ME is H, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium equivalent. The invention also concerns processes for preparing these polymers by reacting insoluble polymers which can only swell slightly and contain units of formula (III), in which R is H or C1-C6 alkyl, with (1) alpha -haloacids or their alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salts, or (2) aldehydes and hydrogen cyanide or alkali cyanide, or cyanohydrins comprising aldehydes and alkali cyanide, and hydrolyzing the adducts. The invention further concerns the use of these polymers as adsorber resin for metallic ions and as ion exchangers.

Abstract: The invention concerns amphiphilic graft polymers in which the graft base is a polymer containing at least 5 wt % of units of formula (I) and optionally units of formula (II), R , R being H or C1-C6 alkyl, wherein (a) styrene, C1-C2 alkylstyrene and/or vinyltoluene and optionally (b) other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which can be copolymerized therewith are grafted onto the graft base in a weight ratio of between 1: 99 and 99: 1, and wherein the group (c) is optionally partially or completely cleaved off the graft polymers, forming amino groups. The invention also concerns processes for preparing and using the amphiphilic graft polymers as consolidating agents for paper, as fixing agents for disruptive water-soluble and water-insoluble agents in paper manufacture, as dispersants for inorganic and organic pigments, dyes, concrete and plant-protecting agents, as detergent additives, as coating material for fertilisers and plant-protecting agents, as floor-maintenance agents, as protective colloids for aqueous polymer dispersions, as thickeners for cosmetic formulations, as conditioners for skin-care agents and as a component of hair-cosmetic preparations and cosmetic preparations for oral hygiene.

Abstract: This invention concerns a process for cleaning wastewater and recirculating water in paper production, de-inking and bleaching of pulp. This process involves adsorption of water-soluble anionic compounds and compounds dispersed in water from the wastewater and recirculating water onto fine-particle adsorption agents consisting of insoluble polymers which swell to a very limited extent and contain vinylamine units which have been incorporated by polymerization. This invention further concerns the use of these polymers as adsorption agents for cleaning water recirculation systems in the production of paper and for cleaning paper machine wastewater and discharge from the de-inking process and from pulp bleaching.

Abstract: The invention concerns agglomerated particles of finely divided polymers which are water-soluble or capable of swelling in water and contain ammonium carboxlyate groups, and a process for their preparation by azeotropic dehydration of water-in-oil emulsions of the polymers, which are water-soluble or capable of swelling in water and contain ammonium carboxylate groups, in the presence of 0.1 to 40 wt %, relative to the polymers, of polyalkylene glycols, which have an agglomerating effect and are obtained by the addition of C2 to C4 alkylene oxides to alcohols, phenols, amines or carboxylic acids and which contain at least two alkylene oxide units incorporated by polymerization, and additionally from 0.1 to 20 wt %, relative to the polymers, of protective colloids which are obtained by radical copolymerization of C8 to C40 mono-olefins with monoethylenically unsaturated C4 to C6 dicarboxylic acid anhydrides in the manner of a substance polymerization at temperatures from 80 to 300 DEG C to form copolymers having molar masses of 500 to 20,000 g/mol. The invention further concerns the use of the agglomerated polymer particles as thickeners for textile pigment printing inks.

Abstract: A process for the production of finely-divided polymers of N-vinylformamide (NVF) and polymers which may contain vinylamine units (I), by radical polymerisation of NVF and 0-80 wt.% comonomers (based on total monomer) in aqueous solutions or mixtures at 20-150 deg C, optionally followed by acid or basic hydrolysis of NVF units to vinylamine units. The monomers are polymerised in a reactor fitted with at least two parallel rotating stirrer shafts with stirrer organs, and the resulting water-containing gel polymer is pulverised with the rotating stirrers and then discharged from the reactor.
