Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer, of which powdery product has no defects, simply mixable with a beauty or a dermatological preparation. SOLUTION: This W/O type emulsion, in which a water-swellable cross-linked polymer comprising (a) 35-100 wt.% of an ionic monomer, (b) 0-65 wt.% of a nonionic monomer and (c) 0.3-1 mol.% (based on the component (a) and (b)) of at least one bifunctional monomer is dispersed and an oil phase is composed of one or plural fatty acid esters is used as a thickening agent in a beauty or a medicine preparation. The polymer has excellent efficiency, ready wettability, is self reversible and usable without an additional neutralization process and produces pH6-7.

Abstract: Use of water in oil (W/O) emulsions having an oil phase consisting of fatty acid ester(s) and containing a dispersed, crosslinked water-swellable polymerisate consisting of ionic monomers (optionally together with non-ionic monomers) and bifunctional monomer(s) as thickeners in cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations. W/O emulsions having an oil phase consisting of fatty acid ester(s) and containing a dispersed water-swellable polymerisate consisting of: (a) 35-100 wt.% ionic monomers; (b) 0-65 wt.% non-ionic monomers; and (c) 0.3-1 mol% bifunctional monomer(s) based on (a) and (b). Independent claims are included for: (A) the W/O emulsions in which the oil phase consists of polyglycol fatty acid esters from a polyglycerol mixture containing diglycerol and triglycerol and a fatty acid mixture containing caprylic and/or capric acid; and (B) cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations containing the W/O emulsion.

Abstract: Graft polymers are obtained by radically initiated polymerisation of (A) monomers or monomer mixtures of (a) 10 to 100 % by weight N-vinyl carboxylic acid amides having the formula (I), in which R stands for R and C1-C6 alkyl, (b) 0 to 90 % by weight other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers that may be copolymerised with monomers (a), and (c) 0 to 5 % by weight of at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers that contain non-conjugated double bonds in their molecule, in the presence of (B) polymers that contain at least 3 units of a C2-C4 alkylene oxide and/or polytetrahydrofuranes, in a weight ratio (A):(B) equal to (95 to 10):(5 to 80). The group (IV) is then optionally separated from the polymerised monomer (a) of the graft polymer, forming at least units having the formula (1). Also disclosed are a process for preparing said graft polymers and their use as dry and wet strength-increasing agents, as fixatives for impurities and fillers, as retention and dewatering agents for paper-making, as promoters during paper, cardboard and paperboard diketen gluing, as pigment dispersants, as starch cationising agents and as auxiliary substances for producing paper tissues.

Abstract: The invention concerns agglomerated polymer particles made from water-expandable polymers and with a mean particle diameter of 20-5000 mu m. The agglomerated polymer particles consist of primary particles with a mean particle diameter of 0.1-15 mu m and can be produced by polymerisation of water-soluble monomers in the presence of a regulator (1-10 wt % in relation to the monomers) and of a cross linking agent (at least 2000 ppm in relation to the monomers), the process being a water-in-oil polymerisation, with subsequent azeotropic de-watering of the water-in-oil polymer emulsion containing the primary particles in the presence of agglomerating polyalkylene glycols which (a) can be obtained by addition fixation of C2-C4 alkylene oxides to alcohols, phenols, amines or carboxylic acids and (b) contain at least two alkylene oxide units incorporated by polymerisation. The agglomerated polymer particles break down into the primary particles when introduced into water. The invention also concerns processes for producing the agglomerated polymer particles and the use of said particles as thickening agents for printing pastes.

Abstract: Graft polymers obtainable by the radically initiated polymerisation of (A) monomers or monomer mixture of (a) 1 to 100 wt.% N-vinyl carboxylic acid amides of the formula (I) in which R , R = H and C1 to C6 alkyl, (b) 0 to 99 wt.% other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers copolymerisable with the monomers (a), and (c) 0 to 5 wt.% of at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers with unconjugated double bonds in the molecule; in the presence of (B) polymers containing units of vinyl esters of saturated C1 to C4 carboxylic acids and/or vinyl alcohol units, or mixtures containing these polymers and polymers containing at least 3 alkylene oxide units or polytetrahydrofurane; in the ratio by weight (A) : (B) of (95 to 10) : (5 to 90), possibly followed by the separation of the group (II) from the polymerised monomers (I) of the graft polymer, with the formation of units of the formula (III); process for the production of the graft polymers and use of the graft polymers described above in the production of paper, paperboard and cardboard as a dry and wet strengthening agent, as a retention and dewatering agent and as a promoter in diketene gumming and as a starch cationisation agent, as a dispersant for pigments and as a creping auxiliary in the production of tissue papers.

Abstract: The present invention relates to starch which is modified with at least one cationic polymer (P), and a method for producing same which is characterized in that: a) an anionically modified starch (A) is reacted with the cationic polymer (P); or that (b) a native starch (B) or a non-anionically modified starch (C) is reacted with the cationic polymer (P) in the presence of an anionic modifier (M). The invention also relates to the use of said polymer-modified starches.

Abstract: The use of conditioning agents (I) for treating non-metallic surfaces is claimed. (I) comprise polymers consisting of the following monomers :(A) 0.1-100 mol.% vinyl amine; (B) 0-99.9 mol.% other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers ; and (C) 0-5 mol.% monomers with at least two ethylenically unsaturated, non-conjugated double bonds. Also claimed are (i) the surface treatment of non-metallic surfaces by conditioning with these agents; (ii) the preparation of mouldings with metallised surfaces by treating the non-metallic surface of a moulding with one of these agents and then metallising the conditioned surface; and (iii) conditioning baths containing 0.01-5 (0.1-1) wt.% of these agents.
