    Abstract: An aqueous formulation comprises a polymer constructed of from 0 to 99.95% by weight of one or more principal monomers I selected from C 1 -C 20 -alkyl (meth)acrylates, aromatic vinyl compounds having up to 20 carbon atoms, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids containing up to 20 carbon atoms, ethylenically unsaturated nitriles, vinyl ethers of alcohols containing from 1 to 10 carbon atoms and aliphatic hydrocarbons having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms and 1 or 2 double bonds, from 0.05 to 100% by weight of one or more monomers II which carry at least one functional group, which is not to be understood as meaning an ethylenically unsaturated group, this functional group being reactive with the below-defined phosphorus compound in such a way that the phosphorus compound becomes thereby bonded to the polymer, and from 0 to 80% by weight of one or more further monomers III which differ from monomers I and II, and a phosphorus compound which is reactive with the functional group of monomer II, the phosphorus compound being or becoming bonded to the polymer via the functional group. The formulation can be used for consolidating fibrous materials, in particular fibrous webs, or in coatings, impregnants, cleaning or care agents or adhesives to provide flame proofing.

    Abstract: A redispersible polymer powder is prepared by spray drying, freezedrying or precipitation of a monomer emulsion of a vinyl aromatic, unsaturated carboxylic acid, acrylic and/or methacrylic nitrile, amide and/or ester derivative in the presence of a sulfosuccinic acid derivative and anionic and non-ionic emulsifier. A redispersible polymer powder (I) contains at least 70 wt.% of a copolymer (II) obtained by spray or freeze drying or by precipitation, by addition of water soluble solvents or salts from an aqueous dispersion of the copolymer (II). The aqueous dispersion of (II) is obtained by radical copolymerisation of (A) a monomer mixture of (A1) 2-50 wt.% of an 8-12C vinyl aromatic, (A2) 5-40 wt.% of a 3-8C olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or a corresponding anhydride, (A3) 15-90 wt.% of a nitrile, amide and/or ester of an acrylic and/or methacrylic acid having 1-18C in the alcohol, and (A4) 0-20 wt.% of a further copolymerisable olefinically unsaturated monomer, whereby the total monomer content corresponds to 0.1-10 wt.% of (B) an emulsifier mixture comprising (B1) a sulfosuccinic acid derivative of formula (1), (B2) 0.1-10 parts weight (pts. wt.) (per pt. wt. of B1) of a further anionic emulsifier, and (B3) 0-10 pts. wt. (per pt. wt. of B1) of a nonionic emulsifier).     Abstract: The residual monomer content of aqueous polymer dispersions is reduced by further treatment with an initiator system containing a peroxide, a saturated alpha - hydroxycarboxylic acid and, optionally, multivalent ions of a variable-valency metal. A method for reducing the residual monomer content in aqueous polymer dispersions comprises post-treatment by addition of an initiator system essentially containing: (a) 0.01-5 wt% (based on total amount of monomers used to make the dispersion) of a compound of formula: R -O-O-R (a1), and/or a compound which liberates hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in aqueous medium (a2); (b) 0.01-30 wt% alpha -hydroxy- carboxylic acid with no polymerisable carbon-carbon double bonds or a salt thereof; and (c) 0-1000 ppm multivalent metal ions of variable valency.     Abstract: Core shell (C/S) particles comprises a shell (S) made from film forming material, and a core (C) that is resistant to deformation under the film forming conditions for (S). The core is not swollen or only very slightly swollen by (S), and has a mono-disperse particle size distribution. Materials (C) and (S) have different refractive indices. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) production of the C/S particles by homogenising previously prepared core polymer particles with monomers or prepolymers of the shell polymer in an inert medium, and polymerising the mixture under conditions such that the shell polymer (or precursor) is deposited on the core; (b) production of decorative and/or protective coatings comprises applying the particles or preparations to optionally pretreated substrates, removing any liquid dispersant and/or diluent, forming a film of the shell material, and crosslinking if required, with orientation of the core; and (c) production of effect colours, by applying the particles or preparations to a low adhesion substrate, possibly evaporating any solvent or diluent, converting the shell material into a liquid, soft or viscoelastic matrix phase, orienting the core at least to domains with a regular structure, hardening the shell material to fix the core structure, detaching the hardened film from the substrate and milling to the required particle size (to produce a pigment or powder).

    Abstract: Leather preparations are prepared from copolymer dispersions containing hydrolyzable silyl groups Leather preparations (I) having good substrate adhesion, good flow and heat resistance properties are prepared by treatment of the leather surface with a copolymer (II) as a binding agent and optionally pigments and conventional additives. 0.05-10 wt.% of (II) contains a hydrolyzable silyl group of formula (1) bonded to a C atom. R = 1-12C alkyl, aryl or alkaryl; R = methoxy, ethoxy, 2-methoxyethoxy, 2 ethoxyethoxy, 2-polyethoxyethoxy and/or acetoxy; and x = 0 or 1. The copolymer (II) may be formed in situ from a copolymer/silane mixture by reaction of a polymer analogue of a copolymer containing functional groups with a silane to introduce silyl groups of formula (1) into the copolymer.
