Abstract: Production of aqueous polymer dispersions with low viscosity and a polymer volume concentration NOTLESS 50 vol.% comprises free radical emulsion polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, except vinylidene halides, in the presence of initiator(s) and a starting polymer. Most of the monomers are emulsified in an aqueous dispersion of the starting polymer and this emulsion is transferred continuously to the polymerisation reaction.

Abstract: The process for drying aqueous dispersions of a polymer (B), in which the dispersion contains, as auxiliary drying agent, at least one polymer (A) containing (in polymerised form) 80-100 wt.% monomer(s) (a) of formula CH2CR1C(O)XCR2R3-R4-SOH (I) or salts thereof and 0-20 wt.% other radically polymerisable monomer(s) (b), in which R1-3 = H or 1-3 C alkyl; R4 = 1-5 C alkylene; and X = O or NH. Also claimed are: (i) the polymer powder containing (A) and (B); (ii) the mineral binder containing such polymer powder(s); (iii) the synthetic resin-plaster drying preparation containing such powder(s); (iv) the aqueous polymer dispersions of (B) with an emulsifier content of not more than 2 wt.%, containing (A) with a Mw of 5000-35,000 as added dispersant; (v) the process for the radical aqueous emulsion polymerisation of ethylenic monomers, in which (A) with a Mw of 5000-35000 is added before, during or after polymerisation; and (vi) the polymer powder obtained by drying as above.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to a method for producing emulsion polymer particles with a core-shell structure, and to the use thereof in paints, paper coatings, foams and cosmetic agents. Particularly disclosed is a process for preparing emulsion polymer particles by preparing an aqueous emulsion comprising a multistage emulsion polymer created by sequentially polymerising (i) a seed; (ii) a swell seed comprising 0 to 100% by weight of at least one nonionically ethylenically unsaturated monomer and 0 to 40% by weight of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated hydrophilic monomer, based in each case on the total weight of the core stage polymer comprising the seed (i) and the swell seed (ii); (iii) a first shell comprising 85% to 99.9% by weight of at least one nonionically ethylenically unsaturated monomer and 0.1% to 15% by weight of at least one hydrophilic monoethylenically unsaturated monomer; (iv) a second shell comprising 85% to 99.9% by weight of at least one nonionically ethylenically unsaturated monomer and 0.1% to 15% by weight of at least one hydrophilic monoethylenically unsaturated monomer; (v) at least one plasticizer monomer having a ceiling temperature of less than 181 Deg C, preferably less than 95 Deg C; (vi) neutralizing to a pH of at least 7.5, the resultant particles with a base a third shell comprising 90% to 99.9% by weight of at least one nonionically ethylenically unsaturated monomer and 0.1% to 10% by weight of at least one hydrophilic monoethylenically unsaturated monomer; and, (vii) if appropriate, further shells comprising at least one nonionically ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one hydrophilic monoethylenically unsaturated monomer. The term "seed" relates to an aqueous polymer dispersion which is used at the beginning of the multistage polymerization and is the product of an emulsion polymerization, or may relate to an aqueous polymer dispersion present at the end of one of the polymerization stages for preparing the hollow particle dispersion, with the exception of the last stage. The seed which is used at the beginning of the polymerization of the first stage can also be prepared in situ and is composed preferably of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, esters of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, or mixtures thereof. Particularly preferred mixtures are those of n-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and methacrylic acid.

Abstract: The invention also relates to a method for stain resistance and penetration resistance of aqueous coating compositions which method comprises providing a coating composition which contain at least one pigment, at least one film-forming polymer in the form of an aqeuous polymer dispersion and at least one anionic surfactant, wherein the anionic surfactant comprises at least 85 % by weight, preferably at least 90 % by weight, more preferably at least 95 % by weight, based on the total weight of anionic surfactant in the coating composition, of at least one anionic surfactant S, which is selected from semi-esters of sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid with an alcohol, which alcohol carries at least one alkyl radical having from 8 to 30 carbon atoms or an alkyl substituted phenyl radical wherein alkyl has from 4 to 30 carbon atoms and which alcohol may carry an oligo-C 2 -C 3 -alkylene-ether group provided that the number of repeating units in the oligo-C 2 -C 3 -alkylene-ether group is at most 15, or a salt thereof.
