    Abstract: A process for the compression of ethylenically unsaturated monomers at a pressure of 200-5,000 bar in the absence of a polymerization initiator is carried out in the presence of a nitroxyl compound (I). A process for the condensation of ethylenically unsaturated monomers at a pressure of 200-5,000 bar in the absence of a polymerization initiator is carried out in the presence of a nitroxyl compound of formula (I). Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the production of copolymers by condensation of the comonomer, optionally as a mixture in the presence of (I) followed by polymerization at 50-350 degrees C by addition of a polymerization initiator; (ii) the resulting copolymer product. R , R = 1-4C alkyl or R and R together with the C atom they are bonded to form a 5 or 6 C saturated hydrocarbon ring; R = 1-4C alkyl; R = H or 1-12C alkyl.

    Abstract: Graft copolymers are obtained by an aqueous- phase process in which polymerization of the rubber-elastic base is taken to completion and an N-oxyl radical compound of a sec. amine with no hydrogens on the alpha -carbon atom is added before and/or during polymerization of the grafted shell. A process for the production, in the aqueous phase, of graft copolymers (A) of (a1) 30-95 wt% rubber-elastic graft base derived from (a11) 50-100 wt% conjugated diene and (a12) 0-50 wt% other monounsaturated monomer(s) or from (a11 asterisk ) 50-100 wt% 1-10C alkyl acrylate, (a12 asterisk ) 0-10 wt% polyfunctional crosslinking monomer and (a13 asterisk ) 0-40 wt% other monounsaturated monomer(s) and (a2) 5-70 wt% grafted shell derived from (a21) 50-100 wt% styrene compound of formula (S): R , R = H or 1-8 C alkyl (a22) 0-40 wt% (meth)acrylonitrile and (a23) 0-40 wt% other monounsaturated monomer(s). In this process, polymerization of the base stage (a1) is taken to completion and then at least one N-oxyl radical compound of a sec. amine with no hydrogen atoms on the alpha -carbon atom is added before and/or during polymerization stage (a2). An Independent claim is also included for graft copolymers obtained by this process.

    Abstract: A method of radical-initiated emulsion polymerisation for the production of aqueous polymer dispersions comprises emulsifying unsaturated monomer(s) in aqueous media with the aid of dispersants and then polymerising with a radical initiator in presence of a stable N-oxyl radical, at above 100 deg C and at a pressure above the vapour pressure of the reaction mixture. The initiators used comprise peroxides, hydroperoxides and/or azo compounds with a molal solubility at 25 deg C and 1 bar in water which is greater than or equal to that of tert.-butyl hydroperoxide and with a dissociation temperature of less than 100 deg C in the polymerisation mixture. Also claimed are aqueous polymer dispersions obtained by this process.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a mixture of substances containing one or several compounds with vinyl groups as constituent (A) and a stabilizer (B) as another constituent containing one or several easily volatile nitroxyl compounds as constituent (b1), one or several non-easily volatile nitroxyl compounds as constituent (b2), optionally one or several aromatic nitro compounds as constituent (b3) and optionally one or several iron compounds as constituent (b4). The invention also relates to stabilizers (B) containing constituents (b1) and (b2), (b1) and (b2) and (b3), (b1) and (b2) and (b4), in addition to (b1), (b2), (b3) and (b4). The invention further relates to a method for inhibiting premature polymerization of compounds with vinyl groups during the cleaning thereof or distillation by adding a stabilizer (B), or by adding the constituents of stabilizer (B) as individual substances or in at least two groups of constituents.
