    Abstract: Prepn. of 2-cyclopentenones of formula (I) where R1-R4=H, or C1-12 alkyl or alkenyl or C5-7 cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl, or aralkyl or aryl by conversion of hexenedioic acids or their esters of formula (II) and (III) at 150-450 deg.C on solid oxide catalysts, where R1 and R4 are as above, R5 and R6=H or C1-12 alkyl, or C5-6 cycloalkyl or aralkyl or aryl. Pref. the catalyst is an oxide of elements in gps. I-V or subgps. I-VIII, or a rare earth oxide, or a mixt. of these, or aluminium oxide. The conversion of (II) or (III) is carried out with water in a mole ratio of starting prod: water between 1:0.05 and 1:20. The conversion is carried out in a fluidised bed. The conversion is carried out between 300 and 345 deg.C.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of esters of tetrahydropyran-4-carboxylic acid of the general formula I, where R1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl group, by treating butyrolactones of the general formula II, where R2 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, or an acyl group -CO-R3, R3 being a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group with from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, with alcohols of the general formula III at temperatures of from 150 DEG C. to 400 DEG C. in the presence of acid catalysts.
