(monomers I), 0.1-80 wt.% (meth)acrylate ester(s) of at least 10C aliphatic alcohols (monomers II), 0-94.9 wt.% "principal monomers", comprising 1-9C alkyl (meth)acrylates, vinyl esters of 1-20C carboxylic acids, up to 20C vinylaromatics, unsatd. nitriles, vinyl halides and/or 2-8C aliphatic hydrocarbons with 1 or 2 double bonds (monomers III) and 0-60 wt.% other monomers (IV). Also claimed is the above process for the prodn. of aq. polymer dispersions.

Abstract: A process for the neutralisation or slight basification of aqueous dispersions of film forming copolymers containing carboxylic groups with an alkali metal hydroxide is claimed. The aqueous copolymer dispersion is strongly mixed with a dilute, aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution under static pH control such that during the addition the pH does not exceed 7.9 and the final pH is 7.0-7.9. An Independent claim is included for a coating composition for mineral based molded articles prepared using the neutralized polymer dispersion.

Abstract: The spectroscopy method involves feeding light from a stimulation light source (1) via a first optical fibre (2) to a fibre coupler (3) and from there via a second optical fibre (4) to a specimen (6). Fluorescent light emitted from particles in the specimen are fed via the second optical fibre back to the coupler and from there via a third optical fibre (8) to a detector (10). Alternatively, the light from the source can be fed to the specimen via a first optical fibre and fluorescent light from particles in the specimen passed via a second fibre to a detector, whereby the ends of the fibres facing the specimen are oriented w.r.t. each other so that emitted stimulation light passes to a specimen region from which fluorescent light will be detected.

Abstract: Preparation of aqueous polymer dispersions of wt. average particle diameter above 400 nm comprises radically polymerising ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of a surface active agent (emulsifier) and 0.001-1 wt.% seed polymer of monomodal particle size where, when 1% monomer conversion has been achieved, a redox initiator system is added, comprising an organic or inorganic (hydro)peroxide(s) and ascorbic acid, and polymerisation is undertaken in the presence of this system or another initiator system. Also claimed are the obtained aqueous dispersions comprising at least 60 wt.% polymer particles of dmax above 800 nm and half width h1/2 below 1/2 dmax, with the remainder being of diameter d below dmax.
