Abstract: Process for preparing ultrafine powders based on polyamides by contacting polyamides having a relative solution viscosity &eegr;rel in the range from 1.5 to 2.0, measured in 0.5% m-cresol solution at 25° C., with an alcoholic medium in the presence of inorganic particles suspended therein under the action of pressure and/or temperature to generate an at least partial solution, and then precipitating the polyamide from the at least partial solution; the resulting ultrafine polyamide powders have a specific BET surface area of 5-100 m2/g; a fineness d50 of less than 70 μm; an apparent density AD from 250 to 1000 g/l; and a particle content of 0.1 to 80% by weight of inorganic particles based on the total weight of the polyamide powder; which powders are equally suitable for coatings and for mouldings and components with improved mechanical properties.

Abstract: Aqueous dispersion which comprises hydrophobized silicon dioxide powder with a content of between 5 and 50 wt. % and which comprises at least one compound of the general formula R & supl; -COO-(CH2-CH(Ph)-O)a-(CnH2n-xR2x-O)b-R3 (I). It is prepared by dispersing the hydrophobic silicon dioxide powder, dispersing agent and optionally pH-regulating substances and further additives in an aqueous medium. It can be employed as an additive to waterborne fillers in the automobile industry, as a coating constituent in can and coil coating processes, as an additive in water-based UV-curable formulations e.g. for wood preservation and as a constituent of protective lacquer films.

Abstract: The production of a finely divided stable dispersion of solids having an average particle size of 10 nm to 10 microns comprises injecting at least two streams of a pre-dispersion via high pressure pumps through a nozzle into a reactor chamber enclosing a reactor housing, introducing water vapor into the reactor chamber via an opening so that a vapor atmosphere mainly consisting of water vapor is produced in the chamber, and removing the finely dispersion and vapor and/or partially condensed vapor consisting mainly of water on the gas inlet side from the reactor chamber. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process. Preferred Features: The pre-dispersion comprises water or organic compounds as the liquid phase. The pre-dispersion contains a dispersing agent and/or surface-active substances. The water vapor has a temperature of the boiling temperature of water at the pressure prevailing on the gas inlet side.

Abstract: In dispersions of mixed oxide particles containing silicon dioxide and cationic polymer, the amount of cationic polymer can be 25% decreased by doping the silicon dioxide with 0.25 wt.% aluminum oxide without affecting the positive surface charge on the particles. A stable aqueous dispersion contains flame-hydrolytically prepared mixed oxide particles containing silicon dioxide and aluminum oxide or titanium dioxide, with a BET (Brunauer Emmett Teller) surface area between 5 and 600 m2/g, which shows a negative zeta potential, and a dissolved cationic polymer of weight average mol. wt. less than 100,000 g/mole, the dispersion having a positive zeta potential. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a process for preparation of the dispersion involving predispersion and final dispersion, where before predispersion the cationic polymer is included in an aqueous medium or is added during dispersion, or the mixed oxide particles and cationic polymer are added alternately; (2) a brushing on paint for formation of an ink acceptance layer using the dispersion and at least one hydrophilic binder; (3) a process for preparation of the brushing on paint by addition of the dispersion to a solution of hydrophilic binder, optionally with addition of other additives, followed by dilution to the required ratio of mixed oxide and binder and the desired total solids content; (4) an ink take up medium using a brushing on paint; and (5) a method for preparation of the ink take up medium involving application of the brushing on paint to a carrier and drying.

Abstract: Aluminium oxide doped with a divalent metal oxide, produced by flame hydrolysis and which has no spinell structures or alpha-aluminium detectable in an x-ray diffractogram.
