For CTAB surface areas of (A) 200-250, (B) 250-3300, (C) 300-400 m /g, the Hg consumption is (A) 0.27-0.49, (B) 0.35-0.50, (C) 0.32-0.42 ml/g for 10-20 nm pores; (A) 0.22-0.32, (B) 0.15-0.30, (C) 0.17-0.22 ml/g for 20-30 nm pores; (A) 0.15-0.21, (B) 0.12-0.17, (C) 0.12-0.15 ml/g for 30-40 nm pores; (A) 0.11-0.16, (B) 0.09-0.12, (C) 0.08-0.11 ml/g for 40-50 nm pores; and (A) 0.08-0.12, (B) 0.06-0.10, (C) 0.06-0.09 ml/g for 50-60 nm pores. Abstract: Disclosed herein is a process for preparing pure silicon, comprising the reduction of purified silicon oxide with one or more pure carbon sources, wherein the pure carbon sources are selected from the group consisting of carbohydrate, graphite, coke, coal, carbon black and thermal black, the purified silicon oxide has a content of other polyvalent metals of less than or equal to 300 ppm, based on the silicon oxide, and wherein the purification of the silicon oxide comprises the following steps a to d): providing silicates dissolved in an aqueous phase; contacting with a strongly acidic cation exchange resin of the hydrogen type, in an amount which is sufficient for the ion exchange of essentially all other metal ions in the aqueous phase, the temperature of the aqueous phase being in the range from 0 DEGREE C to 60 DEGREE C, obtaining the aqueous phase of an active silica with an SiO2 concentration of from 2 to 6% by weight and a pH of from 0 to 4, obtaining purified silicon oxide, and wherein further silicon carbide is added in a formulation comprising the purified silicon oxide and at least one pure carbon source silicon or the purified silicon oxide or at least one pure carbon source and wherein pure silicon means a material displaying ? 5 ppm of aluminium, ?10 ppm to 0.0001 ppt of boron, ? 2 ppm of calcium, ? 20 ppm of iron, ? 10 ppm of nickel,

Abstract: The invention relates to a complete method for producing pure silicon that is suitable for use as solar-grade silicon, comprising the reduction of a purified silicon oxide using one or more pure carbon sources, the purified silicon oxide, which was purified as silicon oxide dissolved in an aqueous phase, having a content of other polyvalent metals or metal oxides, in relation to the silicon oxide, of less than or equal to 300 ppm, preferably less than 100 ppm, especially preferably less than 50 ppm and according to the invention less than 10 ppm of the other metals and being obtained advantageously by gel formation in alkaline conditions. The invention also relates to a formulation containing an activator and to the use of purified silicon oxide together with an activator for producing silicon.
