Abstract: Process for preparing an alkaline dispersion of aggregated silicon dioxide particles by dividing a preliminary dispersion within a pH of 3 to 5 into at least two streams, placing these streams under a pressure of at least 50 bar and depressurizing them to a collision point, each via one nozzle, in a grinding chamber, and admixing the dispersion that runs off at the bottom, while still in the grinding chamber, with an alkaline substance in an amount such that the dispersion overall has a pH of more than 7.

Abstract: Aqueous dispersion containing silicon dioxide powder, which is stable in a p H range of 2 to 6, which contains a cation-providing compound that is at least partially soluble in this pH range and the zeta potential of which is less than or equal to zero. It is produced by bringing silicon dioxide powder and at least one cation-providing compound into contact whilst moving in an aqueous medium. The dispersion can be used for chemical-mechanical polishing of metal surfaces.

Abstract: An aqueous dispersion that can be used in the coating of glass, ceramics and metal surfaces is prepared by placing, in water, an aggregated titanium dioxide powder having a specific surface area of from 20 to 150 m2/g in such an amount that the desired dispersion contains at least 20 wt. % titanium dioxide, and at least one amino alcohol having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and at least one carboxylic acid selected from dibasic carboxylic acids and/or hydroxycarboxylic acids having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms. A pre-dispersion is produced by introducing energy in an amount of less than 200 kJ/m3. Then a dispersion is produced in which the aggregated titanium dioxide powder has a mean, volume-related aggregate diameter of less than 150 nm by grinding the pre-dispersion with a high-energy mill at a pressure of at least 500 bar.

Abstract: Process for the production of an aqueous dispersion of pyrogenically produced metal oxide and metalloid oxide powders with a BET surface area of between 5 and 600 m2/g, with a metal oxide or metalloid oxide content in the dispersion of between 5 and 25 wt. %, comprising the following steps: water, which is optionally adjusted to pH values of between 2 and 4 by adding acids, is circulated from a receiving vessel via a rotor/stator machine, and metal oxide or metalloid oxide powder is introduced, using a feed device, into the shear zone between the slots in the rotor teeth and the stator slots, continuously or discontinuously and with the rotor/stator machine running, in a quantity such that a predispersion with a solids content of between 20 and 40 wt. % results, and, after all the metal oxide powder or metalloid oxide powder has been added, the feed device closes and shearing continues in such a way that the shear rate is in the range of between 10000 and 40000 s-1, and then, by dilution, the predispersion is adjusted to the desired solids content of the dispersion while maintaining the dispersing conditions.
