In liquid-crystalline mixtures, said compounds result in a melting point depression, in a shift in the temperature limit of the Sc phase in ferroelectric mixtures and in other improvements of important electrooptical characteristic values.

Accordingly, they are suitable in particular as components of liquid-crystalline mixtures having a smectic C phase, since they induce a relatively broad nematic phase or widen a narrow nematic phase present and enlarge the temperature range of the smectic C phase towards low, but in particular towards high temperatures.
