    Abstract: Source texts (500) are processed to extract primary metadata in the form of a plurality of sets of words (504, 505). Each of the source texts (500) is compared with each of the sets of words (504, 505). A clustering program extracts the sets of words (504, 505) from the source texts (500). Latent Semantic Analysis is used to compare the similarity of meaning of each source text (500) with each set of words (504, 505) obtained by the clustering program. The comparison obtains a measure of the extent to which each source text (500) is representative of a set of words (504, 505).

    Abstract: Provided is a message broker supporting a publish/subscribe service. The broker is adapted to identify, 120-150, characteristics of the content of messages received from publisher application programs and to use the identification of message content characteristics to determine, 160, which of a set of message handler modules to pass the message to. The selected message handler module processes the message and then one or more derived messages are sent, 200, to subscribers for which this message type or message content has been requested. One or more message handler modules are preferably multimedia processing modules and they are selected in response to identification of particular multimedia types within the message content. Processing by the handler module may be dependent, 180, on subscriber requirements. The broker may be distributed (Fig 2).

    Abstract: An electrolytic display device, specifically an electrochromic display based on viologen, employs metal ions in solution to catalyse the reduction of display material at the display electrodes. The metal ions are deposited faster than the display material and subsequently chemically reduce this material. Thallium (I) as the metal catalyst in combination with an oxy-anion of phosphorus accelerates the display reaction without causing undesired precipitation from the solution. Cadmium (II) in combination with sulphate anions is also an effective catalyst. Either a greater amount of display material may be deposited than without the catalyst or the same amount deposited in a shorter time.

    Abstract: 1473772 Controlling light INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 30 Sept 1975 39872/75 Heading G2F [Also in Division G5] In a display device comprising a transfer electrode El, a dump electrode E2 and a plurality of display electrode E3 immersed in a liquid electrolyte, a potential difference is first applied between electrodes E1 and E2 such as to deposit coloured material on E1, and subsequently a potential difference is applied between E1 and at least one electrode E3 so as effectively to transfer the coloured material to the selected electrode(s) E3. In Fig. 2, dot electrodes E3 are arranged in rows and columns, each column having a respective electrode E1 and E2 and the electrolyte being separated from that in adjacent columns by partitions 14 or by being contained in channels in a substrate. If the coloured material is such as to deposit at a cathode, it is initially deposited on selected electrode E1 by earthing the conductor 15 (FET 18, input T2) and by turning on selected FETs 19 to render corresponding electrode E2 positive. FETs 19 are controlled by a like array of bi-stables 23 forming an input/output register 24, AND gate 22 and control input Cl applied simultaneously with input T2. Subsequently an input T1 renders conductor 15 positive and, in the previously selected columns only, the coloured material is effectively transferred to the electrodes E3 of a selected row by activating the corresponding row input R2 (row conductor to earth). By repeating the process the array is scanned row sequentially. Non-linear resistances Z, e.g. oppositely poled diodes connected in parallel, are preferably provided between each electrode E1 and E3 and its row conductor. Erasure of the display is by turning on FETs 21 (input C2) and successively energizing terminals R1, or by short-circuiting the electrodes E3 to the dump electrode E2. The former erasure method may be used when the display requires refreshing to overcome dissipation of the coloured material by diffusion effects. The current between an electrode E2 and a coloured electrode E3 causes a current sense amplifier 27 to set the respective bi-stable 23 for a subsequent re-writing step. Partial or complete erasure of the display due to electrical read-out thereof may be counteracted similarly by applying sequential positive and negative current pulses across electrodes E2 and E3, the nett current being zero. During the positive pulse, terminal 29 is energized and the current between a written electrode and the electrode E2 produces an output from the amplifier 27, so that the following negative pulse restores the electrode E3 to its original written state. The device may also be constructed as a seven segment display.

    Abstract: Provided are a method and a software-implemented mechanism for assisting a user of a graphical user interface (GUI) with the task of positioning an input device pointer (or otherwise indicating a position selection) when selecting a GUI element such as a button or other icon. The software identifies those GUI elements which are valid selections for the current application state and so are potentially the next element that the user will interact with. Then a predefined set of characteristics for the identified GUI elements are compared to predict which of these GUI elements will be the next GUI element that the user will interact with. The result of this prediction is indicated by moving the pointer to the position within the GUI of the predicted GUI element or by adding emphasis to the predicted GUI element. The user then decides whether this GUI element is required.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to the detection of errors in seismic data and in particular to apparatus for detecting errors in frames of seismic data that can be presented as images. Due to the techniques used for collecting seismic data, an image produced to represent that data will typically be expected to exhibit an inherent symmetry about an axis. The apparatus of the present invention comprises a storage device for storing a frame of seismic data which can be presented as an image, a selection device for selecting an axis within the image as the axis of symmetry, and a divider for dividing the data about the axis of symmetry to create first and second sets of data. Further it includes a comparison means for comparing the sets of data according to preselected matching criteria to determine, based on the degree of matching, whether the extent of mismatch in the frame of data is within a predetermined tolerance.

    Estimating grain size in geological samples

    Abstract: A method for estimating the grain size in geological samples such as cores is achieved by a data processing system wherein data of a geological sample is retrieved from a storage device, the storage device storing data of the geological sample which incorporates least one characteristic varying with the grain size of the sample. Responsive to a selection of a portion of the data, a subset of the data corresponding to the selected portion is retrieved, the subset of data incorporating said at least one characteristic varying with the grain size. Next, a set of variations of said at least one characteristic in said subset of the data is evaluated in order to determine an estimate of the average grain size of the portion with respect to a dominant variation of said set. In preferred embodiments, a digital image of the geological sample representative of said data is displayed on a display device in order to allow a user to select the portion of the image to be evaluated. Then the determined estimate is made available to the user.
