    Abstract: A method of constructing a relatively thick, self-supporting mask suitable for electron beam projection processes. Thickness is achieved by multiple steps of coating with resist, exposure, development and plating. First an intermediate or lift off layer is deposited on a substrate. A plating or a cathode layer may then be deposited. Resist is then applied. A first mask layer comprises metal plated in accordance with the first pattern. For the second exposure a geometrically similar pattern is employed to generate larger apertures. Thus, if the first mask layer has 0.20 mil apertures, the second layer might have corresponding 0.21 mil to 0.22 mil apertures. For initial mask patterns of about 2 mil the second layer might be 2.02 mils. If desired, a third exposure can be employed with a third pattern, similar to the first two, but having larger apertures (by 0.02 to 0.03 mils) than the second pattern.

    Abstract: A magnetizable fluid which serves as a display liquid and which includes a suspension of colloidal magnetic particles is used in a display device. The magnetic fluid is opaque to provide optical contrast. A host liquid is substantially immiscible with the display liquid. The display liquid is carried in a reservoir section which is distributed about the periphery of a display field in the reservoir. Each propagation line of the display field is provided with a bubble generator, which passes bubbles by the input end of each line. A bubble switch coil draws selected bubbles across a gap to reach the associated propagation line in response to a signal impressed on the coil. A uniform rotating magnetic field is provided by a permanent magnet beneath the display or by orthogonal magnetic coils.

    Abstract: 1422466 Electro-plating fine holes INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 15 March 1973 [9 June 1972] 12475/73 Heading C7B A method of electro-plating the surface of a hole extending through a substrate comprises providing a hole extending through the substrate which hole has a tapering cross-sectional area, and electroplating the hole, e.g. with copper whilst flowing electrolyte therethrough in the direction of decreasing cross-sectional area. Alternatively the hole may taper from both surfaces of the substrate towards the centre thereof; the direction of electrolyte through the hole being periodically reversed. Electro-deposition may be continued to substantially fill the hole with deposited metal. The initial hole may be formed using a laser or electron beam, and optionally forming an etchant through the hole so formed. A non-conductive substrate may be rendered conductive by electroless plating, or by thermal decomposition of an organo-metallic complex. The apparatus shown allows electroplating of holes 2 in substrate 17 positioned as cathode between anodes 16 of Cu or Pt mesh, electrolyte being pumped through inlet/outlet ports 14, 15 either continuously or in alternate directions according to the shape of the holes to be plated. After plating electrolyte may be removed from the hole with compressed air and rinsing with water, alcohol or acetone. The substrate coated may be of alumina or sapphire.

    Abstract: A method of forming a ferromagnetic liner on conductive lines of magnetic memory devices and a structure thereof. The ferromagnetic liner increases the flux concentration of current run through the conductive lines, reducing the amount of write current needed to switch magnetic memory cells. The conductive lines are formed in a plate-up method, and the ferromagnetic liner is selectively formed on the plated conductive lines. The ferromagnetic liner may also be formed over conductive lines and a top portion of vias in a peripheral region of the workpiece.

    Abstract: A thin film inductive transducer head includes a magnetic circuit with a pair of legs and inductive coils. The legs are thinner near the pole tip than in the back gap region. The legs are also narrower in the pole tip region than in the back gap region. Resolution is enhanced by the thin pole tips and saturation of the yoke structure is avoided by increasing the cross-sectional area of the yoke structure away from the pole tip region.

    Abstract: A thin film head includes a permeable substrate providing a first shield, which may include a more highly permeable layer on its upper surface for shielding, a layer of permeable material thereon providing a second shield and a first write head leg referred to as the shielding-leg layer and a magnetic gap filled with dielectric material between the substrate and the shielding-leg layer. A magnetoresistive stripe including permeable material extends within the dielectric in said gap near the tip end of the head spaced from the substrate and the shielding-leg layer. An inductive single turn or multiturn writing winding is formed upon a layer of dielectric on the other side of the shielding-leg layer. A second leg layer covers the half of the spiral winding towards the tip end of the head and extends through an opening into contact with the shielding-leg layer.
