Abstract: The hydrogenation catalyst comprises copper, iron, aluminum and optionally zine and a support selected from aluminum hydroxide, aluminum oxide and a mixture of aluminum hydroxide and aluminum oxide, having an atomic ratio of Cu/Fe/Al/Zn in the range of 1/(0.4 to 2.5)/(0.5 to 5.0)/(0 to 1.0). It is produced by dispersing a material for the support in an aqueous medium, depositing cupper and iron on the dispersant, further depositing thereon aluminum and sintering it. It is a catalyst for production of a higher alcohol from its methyl ester, effecting hydrogenation with an improved selectivity and activity.

Abstract: A process for producing desulfurized fats and oils or fatty acid esters, which are highly suitable as a starting material for producing alcohols via hydrogenation, at a high yield is disclosed. Desulfurized fats and oils or fatty acid esters are obtained by contacting fats and oils or fatty acid esters with a catalyst represented by the following formula (I) under a hydrogen atmosphere or a mixture of hydrogen with an inert gas: Ni.CuxOy(I) wherein x represents an atomic ratio of Cu determined by referring Ni as 1 and a value of from 0.02 to 8; and y is an atomic ratio of oxygen satisfying the valence requirements of Ni and Cu. A process for producing alcohols using the desulfurized fats and oils or fatty acid esters is also disclosed. A process for producing an alcohols using desulfurized fats and oils or fatty acid esters is also disclosed. According to the process for producing an alcohol of the present invention, an alcohol of a high purity and good qualities can efficiently and effectively be produced.

Date Jul. 27, 1995A method for preparing a copper-containing hydrogenation reaction catalyst includes the step of reducing a formed precursor of a copper-containing hydrogenation reaction catalyst with hydrogen gas or a mixture of hydrogen and inert gas by liquid phase reduction in a stream of a solvent. The reductive activation is carried out by the two steps of performing the first stage of liquid phase reduction by which the catalyst precursor is activated in the temperature range of from 20 DEG to 140 DEG C. so that at least 10% by weight of the copper oxide contained in the catalyst precursor can be reduced by the time when the temperature passes 140 DEG C., and then performing the second stage of liquid phase reduction by which the catalyst precursor is further activated in the temperature range of from 140 DEG to 250 DEG C. The catalyst thus obtained has markedly improved catalytic activity and selectivity. An alcohol of high quality can be obtained at a high productivity using the catalyst in a fixed bed continuous reaction system.

Abstract: A hydrogenation reaction catalyst precursor of the present invention comprises a catalyst carrier (A) and a metal oxide composition (B) carried on or mixed with the catalyst carrier (A) at a weight ratio of (B)/(A) = 15/85 to 65/35; the catalyst carrier (A) comprising a carrier base material of silica, alumina silica-alumina, magnesia, zirconia, zeolite or diatomaceous earth, and a coating of titanium oxide and/or titanium hydroxide, the metal oxide composition (B) comprising copper oxide, zinc oxide, and at least one oxide of a metal selected from the group consisting of an element of group IIa of the periodic table, an element of group IIIb of the table, a lantanide element, and an actinide element at a weight ratio of 100/(0 to 25)/(0 to 25). A hydrogenation reaction catalyst with a high catalytic activity and a high reaction selectivity is obtained by reduction of the hydrogenation reaction catalyst precursor. By the use of the hydrogenation reaction catalyst of the present invention, a high quality alcohol can be produced at a high yield and with a high selectivity even at a low reaction temperature and a low hydrogen pressure.

Abstract: L'invention a notamment pour objet un procédé pour produire des alcools par réduction catalytique de graisses et d'huiles ou d'esters d'acides gras par l'hydrogène en présence d'un catalyseur pour la réduction des esters. Selon l'invention, lesdites graisses et huiles ou lesdits esters d'acides gras sont préalablement traités dans une atmosphère d'hydrogène ou d'un mélange d'hydrogène et d'un gaz inerte à une température de 100 à 350degré C pour donner une teneur en soufre des graisses et huiles ou des esters d'acides gras de 0,6 ppm ou moins, en présence d'un catalyseur représenté par la formule (I) suivante: (CF DESSIN DANS BOPI) dans laquelle X représente un élément choisi parmi Fe, Zn et Cr; Y représente un élément choisi parmi Al, Si et Ti; x et y représentent chacun une proportion atomique rapportée à la proportion de Cu prise égale à 1, pourvu que x ait une valeur de 0,02 à 2,4 et y une valeur de 0 à 2,0; et z est la proportion d'oxygène satisfaisant les conditions de valences des éléments représentés par X et Y. Applications: fabrication d'alcools de haute pureté avec un bon rendement par réduction.
