Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly execute the multilevel display without generating flicker noise by dividing a subfield in the order of higher luminance among plural subfields, each constituting one field, into plural parts. SOLUTION: In the arrangement of plural subfields in multilevel a display driving method, one field period (1/60sec) of a TV display system and the subfield Sub 8 having the highest luminace are timewisely divided into, for example, nine pieces of subfields, Sub5, Sub6, Sub8a, Sub8b, Sub1,..., Sub4. Moreover, the multilevel displays of 2 (=256) are performed every 1/60sec by selectively performing light emitting displays of the nine subfields, Sub5, Sub6, Sub8a, Sub8b, Sub1,..., Sub4 in this order. The subfield Sub8 having the highest luminance is divided into two parts, Sub8a, Sub8b and they are arranged by being separated with each other in such a manner.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To simplify the panel structure of a display apparatus, lessen the electric power consumption, and extend the life of the apparatus by forming a discharge hole to expose at least a part of a first electrode to a dielectric layer in a discharge cell. CONSTITUTION:A group of first electrodes 11 and a group of starting electrodes 12 formed on an insulating substrate 10 are coated with a dielectric layer 13 and a group of stripe-like second electrodes 15 are formed on a transparent glass substrate 14. The group of the electrodes 15 are kept from the group of the electrodes 11 and the group of the electrodes 12 at prescribed gap and so set as to face to these groups at right angles. Discharge cells 17 are positioned at the position facing to the group of the electrodes 11 and the group of the electrodes 15 at right angles and are composed of walls 16 which are arranged to form a lattice and discharge holes 18 are so formed as to expose at least a part of the electrodes 11 to the layer 13 in the cells 17. Furthermore, auxiliary discharge cells 19 are set at the position facing to the group of the electrodes 15 at right angles and slits 16a are formed in the walls 16 of neighboring cells 17 for the electrodes 12 and the auxiliary cells 19 are communicated with the cells 17. As a result, the resulting panel has a simplified structure, electric power consumption is lowered and the action life can be extended.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prolong the life of a gas discharge display apparatus without degrading the insulating property of a dielectric layer surface by arranging an auxiliary discharging electrode to charge a second dielectric layer and a second electrode opposite to each other and forming the second dielectric layer out of porous material. CONSTITUTION:An auxiliary discharging electrode 2, a first dielectric layer 3a, a second dielectric layer 3b, and stripe shape first electrode 4 group are successively layered on a glass substrate 1. Stripe shape second electrode 6 group which are kept from the first electrode 4 group by a prescribed distance by a barrier plate 5 and rectangular to the electrode 4 group are formed on a translucent glass substrate 7 and the discharging electrode 2 and an electrode 6 are so set on the opposite to each other as to charge the dielectric layer 3b. The dielectric layer 3a is formed out of a compound material containing oxides and having a prescribed pore diameter. The dielectric layer 3b is formed out of a porous compound material having a prescribed pore diameter. The lower face of the barrier plate 5 touches the dielectric layer 3b and the electrode 4 group and the upper face of the barrier plate 5 touches the glass substrate 7 and each contact part of the substrate 1 and the substrate 7 is air-tightly sealed with low melting glass and thus discharge spaces are formed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To display a bright image in which the dot-shaped luminescence on the surface of a cathode can be efficiently observed and expand the selection range of an anode material by providing no anode on a front wall portion between insulating bulkheads. CONSTITUTION:Band-shaped cathodes 2 made of a long conducting film in one direction are provided on the inner face of the back wall 1 of a flat glass envelope. Long insulating bulkheads 4 are formed in the direction perpendicular to the cathodes 2 on the inner face of a transparent front wall 3, and band- shaped anodes 5 are formed on one side face of them. No anode 5 is provided at the portion of the wall 3 between the bulkheads 4, and a bright image is obtained in which the dot-shaped luminescence generated on the surfaces of the cathodes 2 by the discharge between the cathodes 2 and the anodes 5 can be observed through the wall 3. The anode 5 with high light permeability is not required, and the selection range of an anode material can be expanded.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To simplify the panel structure of a display apparatus, lessen the electric power consumption, and extend the life by forming discharge holes in a second dielectric layer and setting address electrodes and anodes face to face as to accumulate electric charge on the surface of the second dielectric layer existing at least in the periphery of the discharge holes. CONSTITUTION:To display the same images in a matrix-type panel, positive potential is applied to anodes 4 corresponding to the discharge cells 9 in the first row in which the images are to be displayed and negative potential applied to address electrodes 2 in the first row. As a result, writing discharge occurs and positive charge is accumulated on the surface of a second dielectric layer 5 and writing discharge automatically stops and at the same time the display content of the first row is saved in the surface. In this case, discharge holes 10 are so formed as to expose at least a part of anode group 4 to the layer 5 and the electrodes 2 and the anodes 4 are set face to face as to accumulate the charge on the surface of the layer 5 existing at least in the peripheries of the holes 10. As a result, charge is accumulated on the layer 5 and writing discharge stops automatically and discharge current can be controlled, so that the panel structure can be simplified and electric power consumption can be lowered and a long operational life can be provided.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a plasma display panel high luminance and high contrast. SOLUTION: This method is the luminance control method in which gradation display methods and signal processing circuits having inverse γ characteristics are combined in a plasma display panel provided with plural subfields in which light luminance is weighted in the field period. In this method, when an input signal level exceeds a detection signal level LD as a certain fixed level, since a signal level detecting part 3 detects this and a switch SW 4 is changed over from a (a) side to a (b) side, a signal output is obtained through an 8-bit gradation display part 6 in which a peak luminance P can be obtained and an inverse γcorrection having an inverse γ characteristic whose γ value is γ=K>2.2 and when the input signal level becomes equal to or lower than the detection signal level LD, since the part 3 detects this and the switch 4 is changed over from the (a) side to the (b) side, the signal output is obtained through an 8-bit gradation display part 5 in which the maximum luminance M3 can be obtained and an inverse γ correction having an inverse γ characteristic whose γ value is γ=2.2.

CONSTITUTION:A luminescent panel has a plurality of through-holes 12a for exposing part of each filament 8 in an insulating plate 11 covering a plurality of filaments 8 arranged on a back base board 7, and each through-hole 12a forms one unit of a picture element region together with fluorescent material layers 13a-13c formed in the adjacency of the through-holes 12a. The fluorescent material layers 13a-13c of each picture element region are housed in a cavity 15a of a separating wall 14 formed on the insulating plate 11 and separated from an adjacent fluorescent material layer. The cavity 15a forms a discharge space by using a translucent front plate 16 installed on the separating wall 14 as a cover, each discharge space communicates with the through-hole 12a at its one end in the lengthy direction and faces an anode 17 formed on the lower surface of the front plate 16 at its other end.
