Abstract: PURPOSE:To simplify the panel structure of a display apparatus, lessen the electric power consumption, and extend the life of the apparatus by forming a discharge hole to expose at least a part of a first electrode to a dielectric layer in a discharge cell. CONSTITUTION:A group of first electrodes 11 and a group of starting electrodes 12 formed on an insulating substrate 10 are coated with a dielectric layer 13 and a group of stripe-like second electrodes 15 are formed on a transparent glass substrate 14. The group of the electrodes 15 are kept from the group of the electrodes 11 and the group of the electrodes 12 at prescribed gap and so set as to face to these groups at right angles. Discharge cells 17 are positioned at the position facing to the group of the electrodes 11 and the group of the electrodes 15 at right angles and are composed of walls 16 which are arranged to form a lattice and discharge holes 18 are so formed as to expose at least a part of the electrodes 11 to the layer 13 in the cells 17. Furthermore, auxiliary discharge cells 19 are set at the position facing to the group of the electrodes 15 at right angles and slits 16a are formed in the walls 16 of neighboring cells 17 for the electrodes 12 and the auxiliary cells 19 are communicated with the cells 17. As a result, the resulting panel has a simplified structure, electric power consumption is lowered and the action life can be extended.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a gas discharge type display device of simple structure, which is equipped with a long lifetime, high brightness, and low power consumption and whose power supply is embodied small and light and is manufacturable at a low cost. CONSTITUTION:Address electrodes 2, dielectric substance layer 3, and cathodes 4 are laid one over another on a photo-transmissive base board of glass 1, and anodes 6 having resistor 6a group 6a and electrode 6b group and an insulative layer 7 are furnished one over the other on an insulative base board 5, wherein the anodes 6 are intersectingly arranged opposing to the address electrodes 2 while the dielectric substance layer 3 and insulative layer 7 are interposed in between. The driving method for this display device consists of impressing a scan pulse can the anodes 6, impressing a write pulse on the address electrode 2 mating with the discharge cell 9 in which a write is to be made so that a write discharge takes place, impressing a retention voltage on the cathodes 4, continuing the retention discharge condition during the period the retention voltage is being impressed, and generating a light emission from the discharge cell 9 into which write is made. In the same manner, scan is made for the group of anodes, and thereby light emissions are performed from all discharge cells 9 into which write is made to generate display of one image.

CONSTITUTION:A group of striped address electrodes 2, dielectric layer 3 and a group of striped cathodes 4 are successively piled to be provided on a glass substrate 1, and a group of striped anodes 6 and an insulating layer 7 are successively piled to be provided on an insulating substrate 5. Relating to a group of the address electrodes 2, a group of the anodes 6 is arranged to be opposed orthogonal through the dielectric layer 3 and insulating layer 5. A discharge hole 10 is provided in the insulating layer 7 in an orthogonal opposed part to groups of the address electrodes 2 and anodes 6 so as to expose at least partly a group o,f the anodes 6, and a group of the cathodes 4 is arranged to be opposed orthogonal relating to a group of the address electrodes 2 so as to accumulate an electric charge in a surface of the dielectric layer 3 in at least the periphery of a group of the cathodes 4.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To simplify the panel structure of a display apparatus, lessen the electric power consumption, and extend the life by forming discharge holes in a second dielectric layer and setting address electrodes and anodes face to face as to accumulate electric charge on the surface of the second dielectric layer existing at least in the periphery of the discharge holes. CONSTITUTION:To display the same images in a matrix-type panel, positive potential is applied to anodes 4 corresponding to the discharge cells 9 in the first row in which the images are to be displayed and negative potential applied to address electrodes 2 in the first row. As a result, writing discharge occurs and positive charge is accumulated on the surface of a second dielectric layer 5 and writing discharge automatically stops and at the same time the display content of the first row is saved in the surface. In this case, discharge holes 10 are so formed as to expose at least a part of anode group 4 to the layer 5 and the electrodes 2 and the anodes 4 are set face to face as to accumulate the charge on the surface of the layer 5 existing at least in the peripheries of the holes 10. As a result, charge is accumulated on the layer 5 and writing discharge stops automatically and discharge current can be controlled, so that the panel structure can be simplified and electric power consumption can be lowered and a long operational life can be provided.

CONSTITUTION:This gas discharge type display device is constituted by providing the surface of an insulating substrate 1 with striped anode 4 groups having resistors 2 and electrode bodies 3 and striped auxiliary anode 5 groups parallel with the anode 4 groups, covering these anode 4 groups with insulator layers 6, orthogonally arranging striped cathode 8 groups disposed on a transmissive glass substrate 7 opposite to these anode 4 groups and auxiliary anode 5 groups, forming discharge cells 10 enclosing the respective opposite spaces of the anode 4 groups and the cathode 8 groups by partition walls 9 and auxiliary discharge cells 11 communicating with the discharge cells 10 in the opposite spaces of the auxiliary anodes 5 and the cathode 8 groups and disposing discharge holes 12 in such a manner that the electrode bodies 3 of the anodes 4 are at least partly exposed from the insulator layers 6. Auxiliary discharge pulses are impressed respectively via resistor 13 groups to the striped auxiliary anode 5 groups. Charging pulses of a high voltage and narrow width are impressed to the auxiliary anode 5 groups.

SOLUTION: This method is the luminance control method in which gradation display methods and signal processing circuits having inverse γ characteristics are combined in a plasma display panel provided with plural subfields in which light luminance is weighted in the field period. In this method, when an input signal level exceeds a detection signal level LD as a certain fixed level, since a signal level detecting part 3 detects this and a switch SW 4 is changed over from a (a) side to a (b) side, a signal output is obtained through an 8-bit gradation display part 6 in which a peak luminance P can be obtained and an inverse γcorrection having an inverse γ characteristic whose γ value is γ=K>2.2 and when the input signal level becomes equal to or lower than the detection signal level LD, since the part 3 detects this and the switch 4 is changed over from the (a) side to the (b) side, the signal output is obtained through an 8-bit gradation display part 5 in which the maximum luminance M3 can be obtained and an inverse γ correction having an inverse γ characteristic whose γ value is γ=2.2.

SOLUTION: An average luminance is enhanced in a gray scale display area 3 and sufficiently high luminance is achieved also in a peak luminance display area 7 for obtaining a high quality picture display by operating to display in a gray scale display area 3 obtaining a gray scale of luminance for an input signal lower than a maximal input signal level 1 corresponding to a maximal gray scale 2, and in a peak gray scale display area 7 displaying a fixed luminance (a peak luminance 6) exceeding the maximal luminance 2 for an input signal (a peak input signal) exceeding a maximal input level 1 corresponding to the maximal luminance 2 respectively.
