Abstract: An information assistance service automatically updates contact information in a subscriber's contacts folder or private directory. The information assistanc e service receives changes to its public telephone number database, which includes name, telephone number, postal address, and possibly e-mail address, compares the information in the contac ts folder to be updated with the changes to the public database, and replaces the informatio n in the contacts folder with new information if the telephone number is included within the changes to the public database. The subscriber may choose to be notified before or after such replacement is made - if before, the user may approve the changes one-by-one or all together. The updating can be performed in substantially real-time, as soon as changes to the public database are received, or the updating can be performed less frequently than those changes are receive d. In the latter case, the changes made to the public database since the last update are kept track of. Alternatively; shadow record information about a contact may be derived when a contact is added to a contacts folder, and an intelligent search may be performed using the shadow record information to update the contact record.

Abstract: The phone number used by a caller accessing a telecommunication service is derived. For example, this phone number may be used to look up in a first database th e name of the user registered with the service, and in a second database the name of the subscriber assigned the phone number. If the two names correspond, the caller is provided with the telecommunication service. Otherwise, a fraud has been detected and various consequences may b e visited upon the caller or the user. Some of these consequences include denying use of the service, charging the caller extra for use of the service, etc.

Abstract: A user may utilize a communication device to contact an information/call center (21-27) where an operator provides personalized information and communication services such as listing, contacts and appointements information. When a user locates a phone number in his/her private directory using a web browser, the user may utilize a direct connect feature of the invention to initiate a phone call over the Internet. Additionally, appointments information is delivered to the user via a voice connection, SM S, email, facsimile, PDA, etc. Also, a calendaring service helps the user plan a future event and an appointment record concerning the future event is automatically incorporated into the user's calendar. At least, one profile associated with the user is used which specifies the subscribed services and preferred ways of receiving them. For example, the profile may specify use o f a special skilled operator, methods of delivery of information to the user, etc.

Abstract: To provide a personalized voice email service, data pertaining to one or mor e of a user's email accounts, e.g., email addresses and account access data, is maintained in a folder by an information assistance service, which is unaffiliated with the email service providers (e.g., AOL, Hotmail, etc.) maintaining the user's email accounts. When the user calls the information assistance service, the user's folder is retrieved. Th e user's email accounts may be accessed on behalf of the user based on the email addresses and account access data in the user's folder. An information assistance provider including, e.g., an operator and/or a voice server, may present information concerning the email messages received in the user's email accounts in different manners. For example, the information assistance provider may report to the user selected email messages that satisfy one or more predetermined criteria, e.g., only those email messages which have been received since the last time the user called the information assistance service. Header information (e.g., sender/address, subject, etc.) concerning the selected email messages may be announced to the user. At the user's request, the information assistance provider may ope n and read a email message to the user. The user may then send a reply email message, or forward the email message to other recipients.

Abstract: When a user calls an information assistance service to request a desired listing, an operator answering the call may search multiple data sources for the desired listing. Such data sources may include, e.g., a contacts folder associated with the user which is maintained by the information assistance service for the user, a public national directory database and an enterprise directory database. When a listing satisfying the request is returned from the search, the source of the listing is identified. For example, if it is determined that the returned listing comes from a source other than the contacts folder, the listing may be incorporated into the contacts folder in accordance with the invention. The manner in which the listing is incorporated into the contacts folder may depend an a user preference.

Abstract: When a caller calls a called party through an information assistance system, the caller is afforded an option to leave a message for the called party in the event that the call cannot be successfully completed. When the called party receives the message from the information assistance system through a subsequent telephone connection, the called party is afforded an option to call the caller back, without first terminating the connection. In a accordance with the invention, the caller may leave the same message for not only the destination number being called, but also other telephone numbers desired by the caller. The inventive message delivery service may also be utilized to perform a wake-up call function, an event reminder function, etc . in accordance with various aspects of the invention.

Abstract: A communications system for providing a service includes an interface configured to receive a directory assistance communication from a requester seeking a desired listing from among a plurality of available desired listings. A processor is configured to obtain a stored profile associated with the requester, the profile including at least one delivery preference set by the requester relating to the format in which said requester desires to have the desired listing delivered to them. A device configured to provide a communication listing associated with the desired listing to the requester, in response to the directory assistance request, in accordance with the preference proscribed by the requester in the profile and then connecting the requester to a second communication listing associated with the desired listing.
