    Abstract: The invention is teaching an edge connector (10) for a printed circuit board (13) having a mating edge and a plurality of signal and ground contact pads (17a, 17b) adjacent the edge, the connector including an elongated dielectric housing (16) having a board-receiving slot (12) for receiving the mating edge of the printed circuit board, a plurality of signal terminals (28) and a plurality of ground terminals (30) mounted on the housing, the terminals having body portions (32, 48) located in the housing and spring contact portions (34, 50) extending into the slot for contacting respective ones of the contact pads on the printed circuit board, said ground terminals having enlarged area portions (56) being provided in such a way that the ground terminals (30) effectively shadow the signal terminals (28), thereby providing increased electrical isolation of individual signal terminals (28) from other signal terminals (28). Preferably, said signal terminals (28) and ground terminals (30) are positioned in an alternating array along each side of the slot means, with each signal terminal being aligned with a ground terminal or each ground terminal being aligned with a signal terminal on opposite transverse sides of the slot, and the ground terminals having significantly larger transverse areas than the signal terminals.

    Abstract: An edge connector (20) is provided for a printed circuit board (94) having a mating edge (94a) and a plurality of contact pads adjacent the edge. The connector includes an elongated dielectric housing (22) having a board-receiving slot (24) for receiving the mating edge of the printed circuit board. A plurality of spring contact elements (48, 50) are mounted in the housing along at least one side of the slot. The spring contact elements have spring contact portions (48a, 50a) extending into the slot for contacting respective ones of the contact pads on the printed circuit board. A surface (52) on the housing at the one side of the slot defines a datum plane beyond which the spring contact portion of at least one of the spring contact elements extends into the slot. A biasing spring (58, 66, 78, 114) biases the printed circuit board against the surface, thereby deflecting the spring contact portion of the at least one spring contact element a predetermined amount.

    Abstract: Electrical terminals (22,24) include torsion bar spring portions for maintaining ample contact forces in small sizes and with simple configurations. A male contact (22) includes a contact portion (26) connected by an axial torsion bar (30) to a base portion (28). When the contact is mated with another contact, the contact portion is pivoted to apply a torque to the torsion bar. A female contact is also disclosed which includes opposed and axially spaced contact portions separated by an axially extending torsion bar to which torque is applied when a mating pin contact displaces the contact portions in opposite arcuate directions.

    Abstract: A method is disclosed for terminating a coaxial connector (10) to a coaxial cable (12). The coaxial connector has an elongated signal pin surrounded in part by an insulating jacket (16) and an elongated shield member (18) surrounding the insulating jacket while the coaxial cable has a signal wire (27) surrounded by an inner insulating member (28), ground means (34, 34) surrounding the insulating jacket and an outer insulating sheath (32) surrounding the ground means. The method includes providing an elongated conductive shield member having a front portion (54) and a rear portion (56). The front portion of the shield member is secured onto the insulating jacket surrounding the signal pin whereby a portion of the signal pin is positioned within the rear portion. The ground means is electrically and mechanically bonded to the rear portion of the shield member. The signal wire is then electrically and mechanically bonded to an exposed portion of the signal pin within the rear portion of the shield member while the signal pin is held by the shield member. The rear portion of the shield member is then closed around the bonded portions of the signal wire and the ground means.

    Abstract: When a contact structure is moved from an initial position to a final position, each of the forwardly extending lead-in portions of the male terminal is effective to gradually and uniformly deflect a respective one of the contact portions of the spring arms. The normal force between the contact portions of the spring arm and the upper and lower surfaces of the male terminal is caused to gradually increase. The lead-in portion of the male terminal has a pair of diverging, non-parallel generally non-deflecting split beams. Inwardly facing, laterally offset, opposing camming portions are adapted to initially engage and gradually deflect the contact portions as the contact structure is moved toward its final position. The gradual and uniform deflection of the contact portions of the spring arms results in a minimal insertion force mating contact structure. The gradual increase in normal force results in a high contact normal force between the male and female terminals. Greater wiping action over a greater length of the conductor is achieved.

The areas (34, 34', 34'', 34''') of the body portions of the terminals are selectively varied to vary the capacitance of the terminals and, therefore, the impedance of the connector to match the given impedance of the electrical circuit. When the connector is used for mounting to a printed circuit board, ground terminals (30) have at least two feet (36) for engaging a respective single ground trace of a common ground circuit on the printed circuit board for reducing the inductance between a particular ground terminal and its respective circuit trace.
