Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving data provide for efficient use communication resources by encoding data in accordance with a first code to produce a block of data, determining transmission data rate of a time frame, selecting a portion of the block of data based on the determined transmission data rate, adding a location identifier data to the portion of data to produce a payload data, wherein the location identifier identifies a location of the portion of data within the block of data, and encoding the payload data in accordance with a second code to produce a packet of data for transmission over the time frame. A transmitter transmits the packet of data over the time frame at the determined data rate. A receiver receives the packet of data over the time frame, and processes the received data accordingly to reproduce the block of data.

Abstract: In a communication system capable of variable rate transmission, scheduling of high speed data transmission improves utilization of the forward link and decreases the transmission delay in data communication. Each remote station is assigned one primary code channel for the duration of the communication with a cell. Secondary code channels of various types and transmission capabilities can be assigned by a channel scheduler for scheduled transmission of data traffic at high rates. Secondary code channels are assigned in accordance with a set of system goals, a list of parameters, and collected information on the status of the communication network. Secondary code channels can be grouped into sets of secondary code channels. Data is partitioned in data frames and transmitted over the primary and secondary code channels which have been assigned to the scheduled user.

Abstract: Techniques for minimizing call setup latency are disclosed. In one aspect, multiple signaling messages are encapsulated and sent as a single message thus reducing the total delay incurred by sequential transmission. In one embodiment, an encapsulation message includes a field indicating the number of messages encapsulated therein. In one example, the encapsulation is performed at a Link Access Control (LAC) layer. Alternate embodiments may perform encapsulation at an alternate layer.

Abstract: In a method for negotiating service configuration in a communication system having at least one dedicated channel which is not shared by communication devices in the communication system, a request message indicative of a proposed service configuration is generated in a service negotiator (20). The request message is multiplexed, in a multiplexer (22) coupled to the negotiator (20), with an information data signal to produce a multiplexed signal. The multiplexed signal is encoded in an encoder (24) interposed between the multiplexer (22) and a transmitter (26) in accordance with a service configuration selected by the service negotiator (20). The multiplexed and encoded signal is transmitted by the transmitter (26) over the dedicated channel. Received signals are decoded a decoder (16) interposed between a receiver (14) and a demultiplexer (18). A response message indicative of a response to the proposed service configuration is received by the receiver (14). A determination is made by the service negotiator (20) whether the response message is indicative of a mutually acceptable service configuration. The encoder (24) is directed by the service negotiator (20) to encode the information data signal in accordance with the proposed service configuration if the response message is indicative of an acceptable service configuration. The encoder (24) is directed by the service negotiator (20) to encode the information data signal with a universal default service configuration if the response message is not indicative of an acceptable service configuration.

Abstract: A wireless telecommunications system that includes a base station, a plurality of remote stations, a first channel for general page messages containing paging information and broadcast databurst message references, and an auxiliary channel for broadcast databurst notification indicators for the purpose of increasing standby time in remote stations configured to receive broadcast databurs messages. The auxiliary channel in one embodiment is an uncoded, on-off keying (OOK) modulated direct sequence spread spectrum signal. In another embodiment the broadcast databurst notification indicators are one or more indicator bits set on the auxiliary channel to indicate to a remote station whether it needs to examine the first channel for broadcast databurst message references. In another embodiment, broadcast databurst notification indicators are multiplexed onto a quick paging channel along with incoming page notification indicators. In another exemplary embodiment a new channel is used for transmission of the broadcast databurst notification indicators.

Abstract: In a communications system including a set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20) in communication with a remote unit (10), a technique is provided for centrally controlling transmission power. In accordance with this technique, a reverse link frame of data is first received from the remote unit (10) at each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20). The base stations (14, 16, 18, 20) determine a frame quality indication corresponding to the received reverse link frame of data and transmit the frame quality indication to a system controller (22, 24). The system controller (22, 24) then calculates, based on the frame quality indication from each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20), an aggregated frame quality indication corresponding to the received reverse link frame of data, and based on the aggregated frame quality indication calculates an absolute reverse threshold value. The absolute reverse threshold value is then provided to each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20), and each of the set of base stations (14, 16, 18, 20) provides a power control command for the remote unit (10) based on a comparison between the frame quality indication determined at the base station and the absolute reverse threshold value.
