    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare a colorless polyester resin having a reduced carboxyl group number, efficiently in a short time, by reacting a polyester with a monofunctional epoxy compound in the presence of an alkaline earth metal compound and phosphoric acid or its ester. CONSTITUTION:A mixture comprising (A) a polyester consisting of >=80 mole % of ethylene terephthalate unit in the recurring unit, (B) a monofunctional epoxy compound (0.1-10 wt% on the basis of (A)), e.g. phenyl glycidyl ether, etc., (C) an alkali earth metal compound, e.g. calcium acetate, etc., and (D) phosphoric acid or its ester (0.05-3.0 equivalent on the basis of (C)), is reacted to give the desired polyester. EFFECT:Hydrolysis resistance is remarkably improved; and the polyester is particularly useful for industrial products, e.g. tire cord, fishing net, etc.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare a modified polyester dyeable with basic dyes, by copolymerizing an alkali metal salt of bis(methoxycarbonyl)-benzenesulfonic acid and adding a vicinal dicarboxylic acid (anhydride), etc. prior to the completion of the polymerization. CONSTITUTION:Dicarboxylic acids consisting mainly of terephthalic acid, glycols consisting mainly of ethylene glycol, and lithium 3, 5-bis(methoxycarbonyl)benzenesulfonate, etc., (0.5-3.5 mole % on the basis of the acid component) are copolymerized by direct polymerization process. A vicinal dicarboxylic acid, e.g. phthalic acid, etc., its anhydride or its ester derivative (preferably 0.3-3 mole % on the basis of the above acid component) is added to the reaction mixture prior to the completion of the polymerization, and the polymerization is completed.
