    Abstract: PURPOSE:To save the consumption of an inert gas in a carbonization or graphitization step, by feeding an inert gas atmosphere discharged from a high temperature side of a heating furnace divided into plural heating zones to divided heating zones on the low-temperature side. CONSTITUTION:A yarn (Y) to be treated is guided to a heating furnace 1 and a heating furnace 1' set at a higher temperature than the heating furnace 1 in order and fired while heating. An atmospheric gas in the heating furnace 1' is discharged from a discharge line 3 and fed through an air supply fan 4 and an atmospheric gas feed line 5 into the heating furnace 1. A fluff separator is preferably provided in the atmospheric gas discharge line 3.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:The titled sizing agent that is composed of modified polyamide obtained by polymerization of alpha-(N,N-dimethylamino)-epsilon-caprolactam, thus showing good adhesion to matrix, handleability in processing and fluffing prevention. CONSTITUTION:alpha-(N,N-dimethylamino)-epsilon-caprolactam alone or a mixture of 30- 100wt%, preferably 40-100% alpha-(N,N-dimethylamino)-epsilon-caprolactam with at least one of cyclic amides of the formula (n is 3-11; R is alkyl) such as epsilon-caprolactam is polymerized by heating in the presence of 1-5wt%, based on the monomer, of a catalyst such as sodium amide and a cocatalyst such as N-acetyl- epsilon-caprolactam in an inert gas atmosphere. The resultant modified polyamide is dissolved in an acidic aqoeuos solution, preferably in 0.5-30% concentration to give the objective sizing agent.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To utilize the heat energy effectively, solve environmental problems and obtain the titled fibers of high quality, by bringing an atmospheric gas generated in the flameproofing step of organic fibers for carbon fibers into contact with a specific metallic catalyst, and recirculating and reusing the gas. CONSTITUTION:Organic fibers 9 for carbon fibers, preferably acrylic fibers, are fed to a flameproofing furnace body 1, oxidized in an atmosphere usually containing oxygen, e.g. air, at 200-350 deg.C, and the atmospheric gas containing oxides of textile oiling agents generated by the treatment is passed through an oxidative decomposition catalytic bed 6 consisting of Cr, Mn, platinum, iron, copper and/or Pd, provided in a circulating line of the flameproofing furnace body 1 by a fan 3. The gas is then passed through a heater 5 and duct 4, and returned to the furnace body 1 for reuse to give the aimed fibers 10. The catalyst is preferably supported on a porous inorganic substance, e.g. silica, and the catalyst is preferably CuO, Pt, etc. particularly MnO2.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a modified carbon fiber having high bundling property and excellent dispersibility in water. CONSTITUTION:The objective modified carbon fiber is obtained by applying 0.05-5wt.% polyester copolymer of a dicarboxylic acid or its ester formable derivative with an alkylene glycol and a polyalkylene glycol or its mono ether onto the surface of a carbon fiber. This modified carbon fiber is suitable for filament for cutting into a short fiber or for short fiber processed into a nonwoven fabric. A dispersion obtained by dispersing this polyester copolymer into water is conveniently used as a modifier. This modified carbon fiber has good processability and its composite product has high dynamic characteristics.
