Abstract: A ball-on-belt transport includes a belt (71) with a steel ball (77) positioned on top of the belt and a magnet (79) on the back side of the belt with the ball forming a nip with the belt to provide necessary normal force against a conveyed sheet and thereby allowing easy lateral pulling of sheets in clearing jams from the nip. Alternatively, a steel ball (85) is retained while in contact with a belt to apply a normal force to a sheet on the belt equal to the weight of the steel ball. The ball (85) is encased in a housing (81) that is surrounded by a solenoid coil (84) such that when current is applied to the coil, it acts as a solenoid and raises the ball off the belt surface and thus releases the nip pressure.

Abstract: A paper conditioner re-moisturizes paper immediately following fusing by rolls (62,64) to restore paper temperature and moisture equilibrium and reduce curl. The paper conditioner has plumbing that includes a pump, supply lines, overflow lines, metering blade lines and return lines. A soaker hose (150) is used to uniformly distribute conditioning agent to a wick (125). The soaker hose (150) has pin-holes that are evenly spaced adjacent the wick (125). The wick (125) is a high density material, such as, cotton that contacts and supplies the conditioning agent to metering rolls (108,109). These rolls contact donor rolls (104,105,106,107), which contact moisturizing rolls (102,103) which contact the paper. Metering blades (115,116) are used to remove excess conditioning agent from the moisturizing rolls (102,103).

Abstract: A system which controls via controller (100) image dependent curl by moisturizing a sheet immediately after fusing by rollers (62,64) determines critical machine and environmental characteristics through a series of on-line sensors. An operator selectable table is used to indicate the type of sheet loaded in each sheet holding tray. Machine software then uses this information to determine how much moisture should be added to each side of the sheet in order to achieve a flat sheet when it reaches equilibrium. The moisture is added by transfer rolls (102,103) which are driven at a variable speed by servo motors (115) in the opposite direction to sheet movement to vary the quantity of moisture that is added to each side of the sheet.

Abstract: A sheet guide position sensor which determines the dimensions of a stack of sheets (54) in a tray (100) having adjustable sheet guides (102). An optical sensor (110) is arranged so that movement of a sheet guide (102) causes a variably graduated scale (104) to be moved past the sensor (110). The sensor (110) may either be a transmissive or reflective type analog sensor in which the strength of the signal generated by the sensor is converted into a position of the sheet guides. A recalibration process is used to prevent contamination of the scale from causing the size determinations by the sensor to be inaccurate. In one embodiment, a digital sensor in cooperation with a digital bar code (Fig.5) or other digital scale can be utilized to determine the variable sheet size, since the digital sensor is insensitive to contamination by dirt or paper particles, etc. In another embodiment, a wiper member (140; Fig.4) is used to clean the variably graduated scales (104).

Abstract: In a document handling system for a copier, for sequentially feeding and registering document sheets to the imaging station, including a registration gate retractably insertable into the document feeding path to engage and register an edge of the document fed thereagainst; the registration gate has first and second registration sides spaced apart by a preset defined distance, the first edges of the documents are registered against one side of the registration gate while it is inserted into the document feeding path, and the document feeding and registering system then lifts the gate and feeds the document past the gate, and then reverses the direction of motion of selected documents to back their opposite edges into registration with the opposite (second) side of the gate in coordination with reinserting the gate into the document path and in coordination with also registering a first edge of the next-fed document against the first side of the gate, and then the gate is re-retracted and those two (or more) documents are fed to the imaging station for "two-up" copying with a registered spacing between them determined by the thickness of the gate.

Abstract: OF THE DISCLOSED EMBODIMENT An improved fade-out system for a copier with a document feeder, for preventing the undesired development of areas of the photosensitive imaging surface relative to the desired latent images of the document thereon, especially with a variable magnification optical imaging system, the improvement particularly in preventing "show around" copy defects from the document feeder, where the document feeder transports the document sheets in a document path onto and over the copying platen of the copier, an array of plural document sensors is positioned in the document feeder for measuring both the length and width of the document sheets being transported onto the copying platen of the copier, and the fade-out system connects with and is controlled by both the array of plural document sensors and the magnification setting of the optical imaging system for preventing development of any areas of the photosensitive imaging surface outside of the latent images of the documents irrespective of the size of the document sheets or the magnification setting. The disclosed document feeder is a part of a document handler with two separate document sheet inputs for either recirculating a stack of document sheets or semiautomatically feeding larger document sheets, and the array of sensors is adjacent the platen and in the document path from both of the document sheet inputs to the platen. The disclosed fade-out system provides automatically variable area flood illumination of the photosensitive imaging surface. The disclosed fade-out system further is responsive to the actual size of the copy sheets on which copies are being made, for automatically preventing development of areas of the photosensitive imaging surface outside of the smaller of the two of the document latent image area or the actual copy sheet size,by fading out any portions of the document latent image area which will not be engaged for image transfer by the copy sheet, and fading out otherwise developable nondocument latent image areas of the photosensitive imaging surface even if they are within areas of the photosensitive imaging surface which will be engaged by the copy sheets, so as to provide complete fade-out for any selected magnification or document size or copy size even if the document latent image area is smaller than the copy sheet or the copy sheet is smaller than the document latent image area, to prevent either "showaround" copy defects or undesirable development of portions of the document latent image area which cannot be transferred to the copy sheet. The disclosed fade-out system can further automatically provide an additional preset fade-out of approximately 2 mm of at least one outer edge of the document latent image area to eliminate any latent images of any shadows of the document sheet edge.
