Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain glass without forming cracks by raising yield dilatancy point of sol by mixing a mixture containing silica, water and a pH controlling agent under a shear force for a specified time and raising the low shearing viscosity to a specific viscosity by controlling the concentration of the pH controlling agent. SOLUTION: A mixture containing silica in an amount of >=50 wt.%, water and a pH controlling agent of a tetraalkylammonium hydroxide, or the like, is mixed under a shear force of 0.5 hp/gal. At this time, the amount of the pH controlling agent added is adjusted according to the surface area of the silica based on the mixture and the concentration of the pH controlling agent is selected so that the value of the low shearing viscosity becomes in the range of about 100 to 1,000 cp or more, preferably, about 3,000 to 5,000 cp for mixing time of at least 30 min. Thereby, the silica sol having yield dilatancy point of >=30,000/sec can be obtained. An optical fiber preform of quartz glass is obtained by applying the sol thus obtained on a core and an inner clad layer, drying to allow the sol to gel, and forming overclad layer without forming cracks.

In the method, rapid and complete chlorination of a germasium salt is conducted by direct reaction of hydrogen chloride gas with the MCVD wastes (filter cake) to produce germanium tetrachloride. The germanium tetrachloride product is completely volatilized and removed from the mixture during the exothermic reactional process. The GeCl4 product is then recovered by a cryogenic method.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a relatively easy and direct constitution for improving the control of the band width of an optical receiver. SOLUTION: A voltage adjuster 20 is used for adding an input supply voltage to a preamplifier 14 of this optical receiver. The preamplifier 14 indicates the band width which is the function of an input voltage and the voltage adjuster 20 can be adjusted by an incorporated potentiometer. At operation, the band width of the optical receiver is measured first. In the case that the band width is too small, the potentiometer is adjusted so as to increase the input voltage added to the preamplifier 14 by changing resistance detected by the voltage adjuster 20. By the change in the input voltage, the band width of the preamplifier 14 is increased, and the 3dB cutoff frequency of the optical receiver rises. Conversely, in the case that the measured band width of the receiver is too large, the potentiometer is adjusted so as to reduce the voltage added to the preamplifier 14 by the voltage adjuster 20.
