    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title polymer beads having a very small particle diameter and being useful for diagnostic microbeads by adding a cationic or anionic surfactant in an amount to give a concentration equal to or higher than the critical micelle concentration to a specified aqueous compound solution, subjecting the obtained solution to a specified treatment, and removing the surfactant from the solution. CONSTITUTION:A cationic or anionic surfactant in an amount to give a concentration equal to or higher than the critical micelle concentration is added to an aqueous solution comprising an acrylamide compound which can give a homopolymer having thermoreversibly hydrophilic and hydrophobic dissolution properties (e.g. N-ethylacrylamide) to prepare a homogeneous aqueous solution, which is subjected to a cross-linking treatment by irradiation at a temperature equal to or higher than the cloud point, and the surfactant is removed from the solution. Thus, fine polymer beads having a particle diameter smaller than that of the conventional submicron beads and heat sensitive characteristics can be produced. These polymer beads can be used for diagnostic microbeads, sustained-release preparations, adsorbents, cosmetics, etc.

    Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:N-(2-Methoxyethyl)-N-n-propylacrylamide expressed by the formula. USE:Useful as a raw material monomer for hydrophilic-hydrophobic heat reversible type high polymer compounds utilizable as a light shielding unit, temperature sensor, adsorbent, toy, interior, resist paste, display, separation membrane, mechanochemical material, etc. PREPARATION:Acryloyl chloride is reacted with N-(2-methoxyethyl)-n- propylamine and triethylamine in a solvent (e.g. benzene) kept at 0-10 deg.C to afford the compound expressed by the formula. The hydrophilic-hydrophobic heat reversible type high polymer compounds are reversibly soluble in water within a low temperature region, become insoluble within a high temperature region and have the transition temperature different from that of conventionally known heat reverisble type polyacrylamide derivatives.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enhance temp. response, by preparing a temp. responsive porous gel comprising a crosslinked gel to polyvinyl methyl ether having fine voids and reversibly chamber in the shape by temp. in the presence of water. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution containing 5-50wt% of polyvinyl methyl ether is received in a container having a required shape to be held to the required shape and the temp. thereof is held in the vicinity of the phase transformation temp. of polyvinyl methyl ether. By this method, the aqueous solution is held to such a state that micro-phase separation is generated in a degree preventing the separation and sedimentation of polyvinyl methyl ether and, in this state, said aqueous solution is irradiated with gamma-rays or electron beam to form crosslinked gel of polyvinyl methyl ether. The obtained polyvinyl methyl ether crosslinked gel has fine voids due to the micro-phase separation and changes in its shape reversibly in response to temp. in the presence of water.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To promote the reaction of a polymer and a compound using minimum amount of water necessary for the processing treatment by impregnating a fiber with a compound reactive with the fiber constituting polymer, laminating with a hydrated polymer gel sheet capable of reversibly sucking and releasing water by temperature change and heating the laminate at a temperature above the phase-transition temperature of said gel. CONSTITUTION:For example, in the thinning processing of a polyester fiber with sodium hydroxide or cotton fiber with cellulase, the fiber is impregnated with the compound reactive with the fiber constituting polymer and subjected e.g. to intermediate drying. The treated fiber is laminated with a hydrated polymer gel sheet capable of reversibly sucking and releasing water by temperature change (e.g. crosslinked gel of polyvinyl methyl ether) and the laminate is sealed, heated at a temperature above the phasetransition temperature of the polymer gel and maintained at the temperature. Water is released from the gel by this treatment to promote the reaction of the polymer and the compound in moistened state. The use of the gel is effective in preventing the waste of large amount of water in contrast to conventional process and enables the supply of necessary minimum amount of water in high efficiency to perform an energy-saving processing of the fiber.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a new thermally reversible hydrophilic-hydrophobic polymer compd. which is reversibly water-soluble at a low temp. range and water- insoluble at a higher temp. range and have a transition temp. different from conventional products by radical-polymerizing N-(2-methoxyethyl)N-n- propylacrylamide. CONSTITUTION:This thermally reversible hydrophilic-hydrophobic polymer compd. consists of a repeating units of formula I and has an MW corresponding to an intrinsic viscosity [eta] of a tetrahydrofulan soln. at 27 deg.C of 0.01-6.0. This polymer compd. is obtd. by radical-polymerizing a vinyl compd. of formula II. In addition, this polymer compd. is reversibly soluble in water at a lower temp. range and insoluble in water at a higher temp. range. The transition temp. changes in accordance with polymn. condition and is usually in the range of about 11-14 deg.C. This polymer compd. can be used as a light insulating body, a temp. sensor, an adsorbent, a toy, an interior, a display, etc.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve temperature responsiveness such as form change etc. by introducing a gel forming liquid comprising a mixture of a water solution of polyvinyl methyl ether and a water solution of water soluble salt of alginic acid into a specific coagulating bath to form gel. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of a water solution of polyvinyl methyl ether and a water solution of water soluble salts of alginic acid is introduced into a coagulating bath comprising a water solution of water soluble salts of metal which forms insoluble salts reacting with anionic high molecular electrolyte kept above phase transition temperature of polyvinyl methyl ether to form gel. This gel is irradiated with gamma rays etc. in such a manner that said gel is not dried, so that polyvinyl methyl ether is crosslinked, where, if necessary, the high molecular electrolyte is removed by treating it with acid or alkali. Consequently, temperature sensitive gel can be obtained which is capable of reversibly changing form, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity relation, and transparency depending on temperature change.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a reaction carrier for the production of immobilized enzyme or microorganism having excellent activity and high reaction rate, by using of a fluid- permeable hollow fiber capable of selectively permeating gas and liquid and coating the outer surface of the hollow fiber with fiber for the immobilization of enzyme or microorganism. CONSTITUTION:A porous ceramic hollow fiber or a hollow fiber having oxygen- enriching function such as polysiloxane fiber is used as a fluid-permeable hollow fiber and the outer surface of the hollow fiber is covered with fibers for the immobilization of enzyme or microorganism, preferably ultrafine fiber of aminoacetalized polyvinyl alcohol having a diameter of preferably 0.05-1mum e.g. by knitting or weaving the immobilization fiber round the hollow fiber in the form of knit strings or winding the immobilization fiber around the hollow fiber. As an alternative method, the hollow fiber and the immobilization fiber are blended and woven to a fabric. When the reaction substrate is a single-component substance, the substrate is introduced into the hollow part of the hollow fiber and when the substrate is two-component substance, a component is introduced into the hollow part and the other component is directly supplied to the fibrous immobilized enzyme or microorganism to enable the efficient conversion of the substrate to a reaction product.
