    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled novel compound which is soluble in water at a low temperature region and reversibly converted to a state insoluble in water at a high-temperature region, and suitable as a light-shielding material for high-temperature chamber, a temperature sensor, an adsorbent for a surfactant, a toy, etc., by carrying out radical polymerization of a specific vinyl compound. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound composed of the recurring unit of formula II and having a mol.wt. corresponding to an intrinsic viscosity [eta]of 0.01-6.0 measured as THF solution at 27 deg.C is produced by radical polymerization of an N-methoxyethoxypropyl (meth)acrylamide of formula I (R is H or methyl). The compound of formula I used as a starting raw material is a novel substance producible e.g. by reacting (meth)acryloyl chloride with methoxyethoxypropylamine and triethylamine in a solvent at 0-10 deg.C.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a thermally reversible hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer having a transition temperature different from that of a conventional thermally reversible polyacrylamide derivative and useful for a light screen for a greenhouse or a chemical laboratory, a temperature sensor, a display, etc., by radical- polymerizing a specified vinyl compound. CONSTITUTION:A vinyl compound of formula I (wherein R1 is H or methyl and R2 is a lower alkyl) is radical-polymerized to obtain a thermally reversible hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer of formula II (wherein R1 and R2 are as defined above). This polymer has such a thermal reversibility of high- temperature hydrophobicity type that it can dissolve in water in a low- temperature range and can not dissolve in water in a high-temperature range. Although the transition temperature of the polymer varies with polymerization conditions, for example, that of poly(N-methoxypropylacrylamide) is 44-48 deg.C in a 1wt%-aqueous solution. Said polymerization is carried out preferably by a solution polymerization process. It is preferable that the degree of polymerization is 0.01-6.0 in terms of an intrinsic viscosity [eta] (as measured in a methanol solution at 30 deg.C).

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a smear-removing agent that uses a hydrophilic and hydrophobic thermally reversible polymer substance as a stain-adsorbing component, promptly and surely removes stains by applying the smear remover to a part of the human body and surely rubbing off the remover to give the same washing effect as the usual water in no use of water. SOLUTION: This smear-removing agent comprises (A) a water-soluble alcohol and (B) a hydrophilic-hydrophobic thermally reversible polymer substance. This aqueous solution has a transition point in the range from the ambient temperature to the human body temperature. As the component B, is used a polymer with a weight-average molecular weight of 10,000-100,000,000, for example, a substance represented by the formula (R1 is H, methyl; A is alkylene, oxyalkylene; at least one of R2 and R3 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or the like, and the rest is H or the like; n is 0 or 1). In a preferred embodiment, the component B is dissolved in a mixed solvent comprising the component A in an amount of 0.5-10 wt.%.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain pH-sensitive and heat-sensitive microbeads which change in diameter with a change in pH or heat and are useful as a functional material by adding a crosslinking agent to a monomer mixture of a specified unsaturated amide with (meth)acrylic acid and subjecting the entire mixture to a polymerization reaction. SOLUTION: At least one crosslinking agent selected from among compounds each having two vinyl groups is added to a mixture comprising 70-95wt.% at least one monomer selected from among unsaturated amides of formula I (wherein R is H or CH3 ; at least one of R and R is an alkyl, and the other is H) and 30-5wt.% at least one monomer [(e.g. (meth)acrylic acid)] selected from unsaturated carboxylic acids of formula II (wherein R is H or CH3 ), cationic or anionic surfactant in an amount to give a concentration equal to or higher than the critical micelle concentration is added to an aqueous solution containing the above mixture, and the entire mixture is subjected to intramicellar copolymerization at a temperature equal to or higher than the cloud point. According to the above process, pH-sensitive heat- sensitive microbeads which are sensitive to both pH and heat, vary in diameter with a change in these factors and are useful as a functional material can be obtained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title polymer heads having a very small particle diameter and being useful for diagnostic microbeads by adding a cationic or anionic surfactant in an amount to give a concentration equal to or higher than the critical micelle concentration to a specified aqueous compound solution, subjecting the obtained solution to a specified. treatment, and removing the surfactant from the solution. CONSTITUTION:A cationic or anionic surfactant in an amount to give a concentration equal to or higher than the critical micelle concentration is added to an aqueous solution comprising an acrylamide compound which can give a homopolymer having thermo-reversibly hydrophilic and hydrophobic dissolution properties [e.g. N-isopropyl(meth)acrylamide] and a crosslinking agent (e.g. N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide) to prepare a homogeneous aqueous solution, which is subjected to intramicellar copolymerization, and the surfactant is removed from the solution at a temperature equal to or higher than the cloud point. Thus, fine polymer beads having a particle diameter smaller than that of the conventional submicron beads and heat sensitive characteristic can be produced. These polymer beads can be used for diagnostic microbeads, sustained-release preparations, adsorbents, cosmetics, etc.
