Abstract: Process for the continuous preparation of an amine by reaction of a primary or secondary alcohol, aldehyde and/or ketone with hydrogen and a nitrogen compound selected from the group consisting of ammonia, primary and secondary amines at a temperature in the range from 60 to 300° C. in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst, wherein the catalytically active composition of the catalyst prior to reduction with hydrogen comprises from 20 to 85% by weight of aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ), zirconium dioxide (ZrO 2 ), titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and/or silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ), from 1 to 70% by weight of oxygen-containing compounds of copper, calculated as CuO, from 0 to 50% by weight of oxygen-containing compounds of magnesium, calculated as MgO, oxygen-containing compounds of chromium, calculated as Cr 2 O 3 , oxygen-containing compounds of zinc, calculated as ZnO, oxygen-containing compounds of barium, calculated as BaO, and/or oxygen-containing compounds of calcium, calculated as CaO, and less than 30% by weight of oxygen-containing compounds of nickel, calculated as NiO, based on the oxygen-containing compounds of copper, calculated as CuO, and the reaction is carried out isothermally in the gas phase in a tube reactor.

Abstract: Preparation of alkyl (un)substituted cyclohexane dicarboxylic acids or corresponding derivatives comprises: (A) reaction of a diene-maleic acid anhydride mixture to form an alkyl (un)substituted cyclohexene dicarboxylic acid anhydride in the condensed phase; (B) formation of the esters; and (C) hydrogenation to the corresponding cyclohexane derivative in either order. Preparation of alkyl (un)substituted cyclohexane dicarboxylic acids or corresponding derivatives (I) comprises: (A) reaction of a diene-maleic acid anhydride mixture to form an alkyl (un)substituted cyclohexene dicarboxylic acid anhydride in the condensed phase; (B) formation of an ester of an alkyl substituted or unsubstituted cyclohexene dicarboxylic acid anhydride; and (C) hydrogenation of the ester from step (B) to the corresponding cyclohexane derivative or (B') hydrogenation of the alkyl (un)substituted cyclohexene dicarboxylic acid anhydride from step (A), followed by (C') formation of an ester from the cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid anhydride from step (B'). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a mixture (II) of alkyl (un)substituted cyclohexane dicarboxylic acids or derivatives (I); and (2) a process for the separation of butadiene from butadiene containing hydrocarbon streams comprises: (i) reaction of the hydrocarbon stream with maleic acid anhydride; and (ii) separation of the resulting cyclohexene dicarboxylic acid anhydride from the remaining hydrocarbons.

Abstract: Processes comprising: (a) providing a first reactant comprising a bioethanol; and (b) reacting the first reactant with a second reactant comprising a component selected from the group consisting of ammonia, primary amines, secondary amines and mixtures thereof, in the presence of hydrogen and a catalytically effective amount of a heterogeneous hydrogenation/dehydrogenation catalyst to form an ethylamine; wherein the catalyst has been activated at a temperature of 100 to 500° C. for at least 25 minutes; wherein prior to activation the catalyst comprises: (i) 20 to 65% by weight of a support material comprising one or both of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3), (ii) 1 to 30% by weight of oxygen-comprising compounds of copper, calculated as CuO, and (iii) 21 to 70% by weight of oxygen-comprising compounds of nickel, calculated as NiO; and wherein after activation the catalyst has a CO uptake capacity of >110 mumol of CO/g of the catalyst.
