Abstract: The muscone of the formula I is prepared by bringing open-chain 2,15-diketones of the general formula II CH3-CO-X-CO-CH3 (II> in which X represents one of the radicals -(-CH2-)@(a> -CH=CH-(-CH2-)@CH=CH- (b> -CH2-CH=CH-(-CH2-)@CH=CH-CH2- (c> -CH2-CH2-CH=CH-(-CH2-)@CH=CH-CH2-CH2- (d) or -CH2-CH2-CH2-CH=CH-(-CH2-)@CH=CH-CH2-CH2-CH2- (e), into contact at temperatures of 300 to 400 DEG C in the presence of 5 to 15 % by weight of water, relative to the amount of catalyst, in the gas phase over a fixed-bed catalyst which contains TiO2, CeO2 or ThO2 as the catalytically active compound and hydrogenating catalytically the unsaturated cyclic ketone formed in this reaction by intramolecular aldol condensation. Furthermore, the open-chain unsaturated ketones of the formulae IIb, IIc and IId and advantageous processes for their preparation and their use as intermediates for a simple industrial muscone synthesis are claimed.

Abstract: The application relates to a process for the preparation of a copper-containing catalyst for low temperature conversion which, in addition to copper oxide, contains zinc oxide and aluminium oxide as essential components, by precipitation of the water-soluble salts from aqueous solution in an alkaline precipitant at pH 5.5 to 7.5 and a temperature of 30 to 90@C. After completion of the formation of precipitate, the precipitation product is aged or conditioned, the precipitate is separated off from the reaction solvent, dried and subjected to a temperature treatment and the resulting solid is mixed with a tabletting aid and tabletted to form catalyst mouldings.

Abstract: Catalyst suitable for hydrogenation of organic cpds., comprises (all based on total wt. of catalyst); (a) 80 wt.% nickel (calculated as nickel oxide); (b) 10-25 wt.% of silicon (calculated as zirconium oxide; and (d) 0-10 wt.% of aluminium (calculated as aluminium oxide). The amt. of silicon dioxide and aluminium oxide is at least 15 wt.%. The catalyst is prepd. by; (2) adding an acidic aq. soln. of nickel-, zirconium- and opt. aluminium salts to a basic aq. soln. or suspension of silicon cpds. (and opt. aluminium cpds.), so that the pH of the resulting mixt. drops to at least 6.5; (2) adding a further basic soln. to bring the pH to 7-8; and (3) isolating the pptd. solid, which is then dried, formed and calcined.
