    Abstract: Producing isocyanurate and uretdione gp.-contg. polyisocyanate mixts. with low colour values (I) comprises catalytic oligomerisation of (cyclo)aliphatic di-isocyanates (II), removal of unreacted monomers and subsequent treatment with radical-forming azo cpds. (III). Also claimed are mixts. with low colour values (I) as obtd. by this process. (III) have decompsn. pt. 20-150 (pref. 50-100) deg. C; the reaction is carried out at above the decompsn. temp., using 200-5000 (pref. 500-3000) ppm (III) (w.rt. mixt. I) and continued until nitrogen evolution ceases. Pref. (II) is 1,6-di-isocyanatohexane (HDI); oligomerisation is carried out at 0-100 deg. C in the presence of catalysts such as tetraalkylammonium cpds., Zn salts of alkylcarboxylic acids etc., after which the catalsyt is deactivated (e.g, by heat) and unreacted (I) is removed by evapn. Various suitable azo cpds. (III) are given; pref. (III) is AIBN. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the prodn. of high-grade polyurethane (PU) paints with high light stability and weather resistance. The invention provides a simple method for producing light-coloured (I) without interferring with the oligomerisation reaction, or for further lightening the colour of dark prods. (I). Cpds. (III) are easily handled (contrast peroxides as used in a prior-art process), and the reaction can be monitored by the evolution of nitrogen.
