Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing an aqueous styrene-butadiene polymer dispersion by means of radical aqueous emulsion polymerisation of a monomer mixture M containing styrene, butadiene, and optionally up to 30 wt. %, in relation to 100 wt. % of monomers, of ethylenically unsaturated comonomers other than styrene and butadiene. The reaction is carried out in a polymerisation vessel according to a monomer supply method, in the presence of a regulator system comprising, in relation to 100 wt. % of monomers, between 0.02 and 0.5 wt. % of at least one hydrocarbon KW having between 6 and 20 C atoms and being selected from compounds forming a pentadienyl radical or a 1 - phenylallyl radical by means of abstraction of a hydrocarbon atom, an .alpha .- methylstyrene dimer, and between 0.3 and 2 wt. % of an organic compound S wi th at least one SH group. The inventive method is characterised in that at leas t 30 %, preferably at least 50 %, especially at least 80 %, and ideally the entire amount (or more than 95 %) of the hydrocarbon KW is present in the polymerisation vessel.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for hydrogenating ethylenically unsaturated double bonds in polymers P by reacting an aqueous dispersion of at least one polymer P with hydrogen in the presence of at least one hydrogenation catalyst comprising at least one transition metal selected from rhodium and/or ruthenium and at least one nonionic phosphorus compound capable of forming a coordinative compound with the transition metal, which comprises incorporating the hydrogenation catalyst into the aqueous dispersion of the polymer P without adding a solvent. The present invention also relates to the aqueous dispersions of the hydrogenated polymers P obtainable by this process and to coating compositions comprising such dispersions.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing an aqueous styrene-butadiene polymer dispersion by the radical aqueous emulsion-polymerisation of a monomer mixture M, containing: between 40 and 80 wt. % styrene as monomer M1; between 20 and 60 wt. % butadiene as monomer M2 and between 0 and 40 wt. %, (in relation to l00 wt. % monomers), of ethylenically unsaturated comonomers M3 that differ from styrene and butadiene, according to a monomer feed process in the presence of between 0.05 and 0.5 wt. %, (in relation to l00 wt. % monomers), of at least one hydrocarbon KW comprising between 6 and 20 C atoms, selected from compounds, which form a pentadienyl or a 1-phenylallyl radical during the abstraction of a hydrogen atom, or from .alpha.-methylstyrene dimers. Said method is characterised in that at least 30 % of the hydrocarbon KW is already present in the polymerisation vessel and the residual quantity of the hydrocarbon KW is fed to the polymerisation reaction during the course of the latter.

Abstract: A process for preparing an aqueous styrene-butadiene polymer dispersion by free-radical aqueous emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture M comprising styrene, butadiene, and if desired up to 30% by weight, based on 100% by weight of monomers, of ethylenically unsaturated comonomers other than styrene and butadiene; in a polymerization vessel by a monomer feed technique in the presence of a regulator system containing, based on 100% by weight of monomers, from 0.02 to 0.5% by weight of at least one hydrocarbon HC having from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, selected from compounds which on abstraction of a hydrogen atom form a pentadienyl radical or 1-phenylallyl radical, and alpha-methylstyrene dimer, and from 0.3 to 2% by weight of an organic compound S containing at least one SH group wherein at least 30%, preferably at least 50%, in particular at least 80%, and with particular preference the entirety (or >95%) of hydrocarbon HC is included in the initial charge to the polymerization vessel.
