    Abstract: Non-linear optical (NLO) materials - comprise one or more polythiophenes (P) containing repeat units of formula (I) and (II) :X, Y = 1-22C alkyl, 1-22C alkoxy, 1-22C alkyloxyalkyl, 1-22C acyl(oxy), 1-22C thioacyl(oxy), 5-8C cycloalkyl, 6-18C aryl or 5-8C heterocycle, any of which may be substituted with one or more 1-22C alkyl, 1-22C alkoxy, 1-22C alkyloxyalkyl or 1-22C (thio)acyl ; NO2 or NHR ; or X and Y may form a ring containing at least one N, O, S and/or P heteroatom, in which at least one of the ring atoms may be substituted with a group Z ; R = H, 1-22C alkyl, 1-22C alkoxy, 1-22C alkyloxyalkyl or 1-22C (thio)acyl ; Z = X or two Z groups can combine to form a group of formula (III)-(VI) ; and A = C, N or P, or a combination of at least two of these atoms, with the provision that any C atom is bonded to a H atom or substituted in the same way as X. Also claimed are (i) non-linear optical materials comprising a formulation (Q) of at least one polymer (P) and at least one other polymer and (ii) non-linear optical materials containing (P) or comprising (Q).

    Abstract: The use of compositions obtainable from a mixture containing A) polyethylenes containing recurring units of the formula I in which R is a radical of the formula R and R and R to R , independently of one another, may be identical or different and are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, -NO2, -CN, C1- to C50-alkyl, C1- to C50-alkoxy, C3- to C50-cycloalkyl, C3- to C50-cycloalkoxy, C6- to C18-aryl, C6- to C18-aryloxy and C4- to C18-heteroaryl radicals, where the abovementioned radicals may in each case have one or more substituents, and where the alkyl, alkoxy, cycloalkyl and cycloalkoxy radicals may each contain one or more double bonds, and each of the abovementioned radicals may be interrupted by one or more heteroatoms or groups containing heteroatoms, and R and R , independently of one another, may be identical or different and are selected from the group consisting of C1- to C50-alkyl and C3- to C50-cycloalkyl radicals, and R is selected from the group consisting of C1- to C50-alkyl and C6- to C18-aryl radicals, and X is a halogen, and M is a divalent or trivalent metal, and n is an integer from 5 to 10 , and p is 2 or 3, and B) at least one polymer other than A, by cleaving off radicals R and in each case an alpha -proton from the polyethylene A, as nonlinear-optical materials.
