Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing liquid crystal compounds of formula (I) or mixtures of liquid crystal compounds of formula (I), wherein the variables have the following meanings: P and P = hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl or reactive radicals by means of which polymerization can be induced; Y and Y = simple chemical bonds, oxygen, sulfur, -O-CO-, -CO-O, -O-CO-O, -CO-NR-, -NR-CO-, -O-CO-NR, -NR-CO-O- or -NR-CO-NR-; R = hydrogen or C1-C4-alkyl; A and A = spacer with one to 30 C-atoms in which the carbon chain has been broken by oxygen in the ether function, sulfur in the thioether function or by non-neighboring imino or C1-C4-alkyl imino groups; and m = a mesogene group. The invention also relates to compositions containing compounds of formula (I) and compositions which can be obtained using the inventive method. The invention further relates to a method for printing and coating objects with compounds of formula (I), with compositions containing compounds of formula (I) or compositions which can be obtained using the inventive method or the objects thus printed or coated. In addition, the invention relates to the use of said compounds or compositions for producing optical components or liquid crystal colorants, as well as to liquid crystal colorants and aqueous emulsion or dispersion containing said compounds or compositions and to pigments which can be obtained form said compounds or compositions.

Abstract: The invention concerns polymerizable liquid-crystalline compounds of the general formula (I) Z -Y -A -Y -M-Y -A -Y -Z in which the variables have the following meanings: Z , Z are radicals with reactive groups which can bring about polymerization; Y - Y are a chemical single bond, oxygen, sulphur, -O-CO-, -CO-O-, -O-CO-O-, -CO-NR-, -NR-CO-, -O-CO-NR-, -NR-CO-O- or -NR-CO-NR-, at least one of the groups Y and Y meaning -O-CO-O-, -O-CO-NR-, -NR-CO-O- or -NR-CO-NR-; A , A are C2-C30 spacers in which the carbon chain can be interrupted by oxygen in the ether function, sulphur in the thioetherfunction or by non-adjacent imino or C1-C4 alkylimino groups; M is a mesogenic group; and R is C1-C4 alkyl. The compounds and compositions containing them are distinguished by advantageous liquid-crystalline phase temperature ranges and can be used in optical display units and cholesteric liquid-crystalline colouring agents.

In addition, Z and Z , independent of one another, represent a group of formula W-Q-, wherein Q represents a chemical bonding or one or multiple substituted alkylene-spacers or arylene-spacers; and W represents a cross-linked heterocyclic group. The invention also relates to a method for producing and utilizing said cholesteric oligomers.

Abstract: A method is proposed for producing pigments by applying a polymerisable mixture to a surface, orienting the liquid crystals in the mixture, polymerising the mixture, removing the polymer film from the surface and shredding the polymer film to form pigment particles. The method is characterised in that the polymerisable mixture contains the following components: a1) at least one chiral liquid crystalline polymerisable monomer or a2) at least one achiral liquid crystalline polymerisable monomer and a chiral compound; and additionally b) a polymer binder and/or monomer compounds which are converted to a polymer binder by polymerisation and/or a dispersing auxiliary agent.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for producing pigment particles and is characterised in that: either a polymerisable mixture containing a dye or interference colouring agent is applied to a surface with recesses in the shape of the desired pigment particles, and is then polymerised, the polymerised pigment particles being afterwards removed from the recesses; or said polymerisable mixture is applied to a smooth surface in the shape of the desired pigment particles, the shape being set in the known way by a printing process, and then polymerised, the polymerised pigment particles being subsequently removed from the surface (not including the production by offset printing of pigment particles of cholesteric-liquid crystalline structure).
