Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition curable with a radiation, comprising a cellulose derivative and a polymerizable solvent, continuously expressing deep color impression by curing, capable of adjusting and fixing color tone irrespective of temperatures and producing a color pattern of reflection and useful as a pigment, etc. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal polymer composition is curable with a radiation such as light or electron beam, which comprises (A) a cellulose derivative of which OH is completely or partially substituted with a group of the formula OR (R is a 1-20C aliphatic group or a 1-20C aromatic group), a group of the formula 0-CO-NH-R, a group of the formula O-CO-R or a group of the formula 0-CO-OR e.g. a cellulose derivative of which OH is substituted with a group of the formula [R' is chlorine, methyl, ethyl or tertiary butyl; (n) is 0 3]}, and (B) a polymerizable monomer such as diethylene glycol dimethacrylate, if necessary, (C) other additives.

Abstract: The compound is based on chiral tetrahydrofuran or hexahydrofuro(3,2-b)furan substituted by at least two mesogenic groups. A compound of formula (Z-Y-(A)m-Y-M-Y)n-X (I) is new. Independent claims are also included for: (A) a liquid crystalline mixture comprising at least one compound as above; and (B) a solid composition comprising a compound as above in copolymerized form.

Abstract: The invention relates to compounds of the general formula (I) X[-Y1-A1-Y2-M-Y3-A2-Z]n in which X is a silicon free, n-bond central unit; the radicals A1 and A2 are, independently of one another, a direct bond or a spacer; the radicals Y1, Y2 and Y3 are, independently of one another, a direct bond, O, S, CO, OCO, COO, OCOO, (a), (b), COS or SCO; M is a mesogene group; Z is a polymerizable group; n is a number between 2 and 6 inclusive; R is hydrogen or C1-C4-alkyl; and the combination of M-Y3-A2-Z can represent a cholesterol radical. These compounds are suitable as orientation layers for liquid crystal materials, as photolinkable adhesives, as monomers for the production of chirally dopable polymerizable liquid crystal systems, as matrix monomers for polymer-dispersed displays, or as a basic material for polymerizable liquid crystal materials for optical elements, like polarizers, retardation plates or lenses.
