Abstract: Production of a supported nickel catalyst involves co-precipitating nickel and at least one other metal (M), selected from silicon, zirconium, hafnium, alkaline earth metals, yttrium, lanthanum and cerium, and optionally a Group 5-11 metal dopant, from a solution containing the corresponding metal salts onto a particulate titania (TiO2) support, and drying, calcining, reducing and optionally passivating the product. An Independent claim is included for a process in which the above catalyst is used.

Abstract: Coated catalysts which comprise at least one catalytically active metal on an inorganic or carbon support are prepared by mixing a solid, preferably vaporizable, precursor material of the at least one catalytically active metal with the inorganic support and heating the mixture obtained in this way with further mixing until no more separate solid precursor material is present, preferably to a temperature at which the precursor material vaporizes. Such coated catalysts may in particular be used in hydrogenations.

Abstract: Hydrogenation of organic compound(s) (I) comprises contacting (I) with a gas containing hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst (A) containing ruthenium, obtained by treating an amorphous silicon dioxide-based carrier material at least once with a halogen-free aqueous solution of a low molecular ruthenium compound and drying and immediately reducing the obtained solid with hydrogen. Hydrogenation of organic compound(s) (I) comprises contacting (I) with a gas containing hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst (A) containing ruthenium and optionally other Group I, VII or VIII transition metal(s), obtained by treating an amorphous silicon dioxide-based carrier material at least once with a halogen-free aqueous solution of a low molecular ruthenium compound and drying at less than 200 deg C and immediately reducing the obtained solid with hydrogen at 100-350 deg C.

Abstract: Providing a ruthenium catalyst for the production of sugar alcohols. Ruthenium catalysts (I) are prepared by: (A) a single or multiple treatment of an amorphous silicon dioxide support material with a halogen free solution of a low mol. wt. ruthenium compound followed by drying at below 200 [deg]C; (B) reduction of the resulting solid with hydrogen at 100-350 [deg]C such that step (B) is carried out immediately after step (A). An independent claim is included for a process for the production of sugar alcohols by catalytic hydrogenation of the corresponding mono- and oligosaccharides in the liquid phase at the heterogeneous catalyst (I), excluding a process for the production of sorbitol.
