Abstract: A water-emulsifiable isocyanate composition is such that (1) the diisocyanate used in the emulsifier preparation is 2,4>- diisocyanatodiphenylmethane; (2) the polyisocyanate present is based on hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and/or isophorone diisocyanate; (3) the HDI-based polyisocyanate makes up >=60 mol.% of all polyisocyanate; and (4) ethylene oxide units form 1-12 wt.% of the polyoxyalkylene used in the emulsifier preparation. A water-emulsifiable isocyanate composition containing (a) an emulsifier of formula X-Y-X obtained by reacting a diisocyanate (Y) with a polyoxyalkylene monoalcohol (X) containing 8-25 ethylene oxide (EO) units and (b) an aliphatic polyisocyanate of NCO functionality 2.5-3.5 is such that (1) the diisocyanate is 2,4>-diisocyanatodiphenylmethane (2,4>-MDI); (2) the polyisocyanate is based on hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and/or isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI); (3) the HDI-based polyisocyanate makes up >=60 mol.% of all polyisocyanate; and (4) the amount of EO units in the polyoxyalkylene units is 1-12 wt.%. An independent claim is also included for 2-stage preparation of the emulsion by preparation of the emulsifier, followed by mixing with the aliphatic polyisocyanate.
